I am trying to find further information about my great x 9 grandfather Samuel Livingston or Levingston. There is some confusion about the spelling of the surname. I know that Samuel was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1611 and died in Danby in Cleveland, Yorkshire, England in 1677. He married Margaret Ratcliffe in Hinderwell, Yorkshire in 1639 and had two daughters, Martha (from whom I descend) and Maria. My problem is Samuel's parents, or at least his father. I know that his mother was a Marion Fortune who died in Stirling in 1619, I don't know when or where she was born. I have two names for Samuel's father, it could be David Livingston or Robert Livingston/Levingston. I know that David was born in Stirling in 1585 and died there about 1634, he was the 5th Lord of Dunipace. I also know that Robert was born in Stirling in 1584 and died there in 1625. I have looked at a number of family trees on Ancestry, some of which have David as Samuel's father whilst others have Robert. I have tried to get information from Scotland's People but unfortunately their records are very sketchy, to say the least. I would love to be able to clear this mystery up as if David is in fact my ancestor then I will be able to trace my ancestry back to the Norman Conquest and that would be amazing. I already have some of the information you have provided however, you have still given me some that I need to study carefully as it may be useful. I do know that David the 5th Lord Dunipace was married to Barbara Forrester in 1609, I think it was, but Samuel could still be his natural son. I realise that I am clutching at straws here but I am sure that I will get some sort of confirmation as to which man is really Samuel's father if I keep searching. Thanks once again. Regards Carole
