I am trying to trace Ada Ruth Phillips, born c1920, in or around Plymouth. In 1947 she married Kenneth Leo Carter at Plymouth register office. Her address at the time was Ridge Park Avenue, Plymouth.
It is believed she had a son (possible name David).
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou

Births Mar 1918
PHILLIPS Ada R Phillips Plymouth 5b 328

From Freebmd...

Her birth cert will give mothers name if that is what you are after, but she may well have no fathers name given on it as her mothers maiden name is phillips and may have bee unmarried.

Hi, and thankyou so much for replying so quickly.

Sadly yes...that is Kenneth's death certificate. He was my father and I found out relatively recently that he was married before he was married to my mother, to Ada Ruth Phillips. I have their marriage certificate, which is dated 1947 and her age is stated as 27 at time of marriage, so not sure if the 1918 would be her. That would put her at 28 when she married, however I'm sure it's feasible that the age could be entered wrongly. On the marriage certificate it doesn't give a father's name which would tie in with what you said about her mother being unmarried. This sounds like it could be her doesn't it?
I don't know if he and Ada divorced or whether the marriage ended upon her death, as my own mother didn't marry my dad until 1981...13 years after I (the youngest) was born although we were told that they married before my oldest sister was born.
Is there a way of finding out any children of hers (I believe her son was born before she met my Dad) and if there were any children born of their marriage?
Again, thankyou so much for the info and help so far.

It all seems to add up to this being her birth and death then, especially with her having no father on her marriage cert.
.If you send for the death cert from the GRO cost £9.25p it may have a child of hers as the informant on it.

She may well have knocked off a couple of years when she married as she was marrying a younger man.?

I do not see any Carter/Phillips births in the Plymouth area after 1947 but there is one in Plympton.

There are 2 possible births before 1947 of a David with mothers maiden name Phillips in Plymouth .
But you would have to send for them to see if they are him with that mothers name on the cert...Again at £9.25p each from the GRO.

I will send you the refs by Private message as they are most likely still living people.

If /when you get those certs do come back here and I will see if I can hep some more.
But I think that death is almost certainly her and could well have her son as informant of her death on it,and then your father was free to marry again, which he did 3 yrs later..

Good luck

I will order the certificates in the new year, and see if that sheds any more light on it. The only thing puzzling me is that on my mum and dad's marriage certificate it sayd my father's marriage was dissolved - would it not say he was a widower? I have no idea, I'm just trying to fit puzzle pieces together. There are so many twists and untruths. I do know that Ada refused to give him a divorce - whether she held out to the end with that refusal I don't know.
Thankyou again. x

Alyson.
If you are going to send for those 3 birth certs that I sent you the refs for do it this way.
Dont give the ref numbers and then you will be able to give the mothers name as checking ref.It takes a little longer for it to arrive, but if you order all 3 and none have the mothers name you are after on them you will get ALL your money back from the GRO.
And if one does they keep only the price of that one.
Re what your dad had on his marriage cert...I have as much idea as you have why he put that..Sorry.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..

Sorry Fan & Alyson but the GRO no longer do checking points. They stopped this when they put the price of certs up to £9.25.
If you dont give any GRO refs then certs will cost more and they will query which cert you want if you only pay for o

I am sorry to disagree Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it,but what I have said is so,I have done it.
You can also phone them and they will do it that way over the phone as well.
You just have to give some details like year and area.
Charged me £9.25p and refunded the one they couldnt find, but sent the one they did find.

I applied for a death cert for a child within a 3 year period without a GRO ref and gave the registration district. Was told there were 2 (I had seen these on FreeBMD) Was asked which one I wanted and said the one whose father was Harry >>> was told we dont do check ponts now so say which cert you want us to send. .

I think it all depends who you get dealing with it at the other end.
I received a birth record printed on a death certificate.

Interesting though if you can get birth certs but seems you need to supply specific details which could be a problem if you dont know them.

I have not tried to get a death that way, only a birth so far.
One they said they couldnt do was because they said there were too many to search of the name and area I gave...Jane Davies..! The local reg office for the area found it in 10 minutes and called me back to say they had found it and for me to send cheque of £10.00(many reg offices seem to charge that now it seems)

Hello, I just thought I'd let you know that I have found Ada's son (my half brother, he wasn't adopted, he was my Dad's biological son) and his children, and have been in contact with one of them! I am hoping to be in contact with my brother at some point. It all happens so quickly doesn't it? What a fantastic Christmas present!
Thankyou all for your help and merry christmas x
