Trying to find Sarah Barnard born 1823 Ropley

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Paul Report 17 Dec 2010 20:37

Sarah Barnard was baptised in Dec 1823 in Ropley - daughter of William and Jane Barnard.
On the 1851 census, a 26 year old Sarah Barnard born in Ropley, appears as a visitor to a household in St Nicholas Cole Abbey in London. This could be my Sarah.
I cannot trace on 1861 census so am assuming she married in 1851-1861 period. So far I have not found her marriage - can anyone help?

Barnards, Barnards, cousins for moi?!?

Everybody here knows I'm always on the hunt for cousins. ;)

My Barnards are from Wiltshire.

Now, if only I had a clue where Ropley was ...

It's really a good idea to give a county or nearaby major city, for those of us who aren't local.

Sorry for not giving details of where Ropley is.
Ropley is near Alresford in Hampshire.

Hampshire, between Winchester and Aldershot.

Thank goodness for google maps.

Oops, criss-cross. ;)

I guess none of us is getting anywhere ... I checked out the Sarah-s in 1861 born in Ropley, all still living in the vicinity, but they seem to be accounted for.

The rest of the family in 1851, for info:

William Barnard 50
Jane Barnard 51
William Barnard 24
Jane Barnard 21
Mary Barnard 18
Georgena Barnard 11
Thomas Barnard 8
Richard Stacey 48

Civil Parish: Ropley
County/Island: Hampshire
Registration district: Alresford

Interesting maybe, the Richard Stacey. There's a Sarah Stacey in 1861 ... but no, she's there in 1851 (Stacy, and aged 26, notwithstanding Ancesry saying 76).

In 1841, they have suffered the fate that befalls all Barnards at least once:

Wm Bernard 40
Janes Bernard 40
Wm Bernard 14
Ellen Bernard 13
Janes Bernard 11
Mancy Bernard 9
Georgina Bernard 2

Civil Parish: Ropley

Janey
I am not sure what you mean by "suffered the fate that befalls all Barnards at least once" !

For info Thomas Barnard aged 8 in 1841 was my GG Grandfather.

They're recorded/transcribed as Bernard.

My grx3 grfather managed to get his baptism registered as Bernard (his parents married as Barnard), so he married as Bernard (twice) and baptised his child as Bernard -- but is Barnard on all censuses and when he dies, and Barnard is the name his child used for all purposes.

And that's not counting Ancestry mistranscriptions. There's a batch of Barnards in Bristol who appear as Barnett in one census ... which Ancestry has transcribed as Carnett ...

Do you know where Sarah was in 1841? Just to have her situated in time and place over a period of time.

And you presumably are in contact with the other people who have this family in their trees here at GR. Only one other has Sarah.

Paul Report 17 Dec 2010 22:38

Sorry - no idea where she was in 1841 - she could have been a ladys maid then and the census isnt searchable on location of birth. For information the Mary Barnard mentioned above married a Scivyer and if you want to find a surname with more mistranscriptions then it would be hard to find!

I forgot to add that any other members of Genesreunited with this Sarah Barnard in their tree copied her from mine!

Paul Report 31 Dec 2010 15:34

Just to say that I have not been able to trace what happened to Sarah Barnard from Ropley after 1851. She may have died somewhere in the London area. She doesnt seem to be on the census from 1861 onwards.

Paul

Paul Report 11 Jan 2011 17:45

It is annoying that she shows as a visitor on the 1851 census as I have no idea where she was living - assumed to be somewhere in London. I have a feeling that she died before 1861 but have no idea where!

Just a nudge to get this back to the top of the list and to see if anyone can find out anything new about my Sarah Barnard

Hi Ozibird,
Could be a possible - it rings a bell so i must dig through old research. How do you know she was working in Alton in 1841? I need to find her 1841 census entry.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 10 Nov 2011 22:43

Now this may not be your Sarah, but as you probably know she's not with her parents in 1841. Remember someone who was 18 in 1841 would have their age rounded down to 15.
