thanks Janey

Great advice, I'll not be caught out again. From now on I will be asking for sources before adding anything. In my own GR tree I don't add a thing that isn't checked and rechecked. Although as I have found to my cost not everyone does the same. I have now found the correct marriage and I'm now thankfully right on track.

That's a lesson everybody needs to learn -- those of us who have try to pass on the wisdom but sometimes we're too late. ;)

Several morons had trees at Ancestry showing my grx4 grfather the parish clerk in a small parish in Cornwall in the 1700s having a son who was born, married and died in Tennessee.

Yes, Ancestry great big tree of the universe: "Sibley" can be a variant of Shipley. That doesn't mean it is remotely reasonable to offer a Sibley in 18th century Cornwall as the father of a Shipley in Tennessee -- or that it's remotely reasonable for anybody to click and add such nonsense to their family tree!

But that's pretty likely what your someone did.

That's a big reason why many of us here try to remember to request the *source* of the information we're chasing, too. ;)

Off you go down the right track, now!

Hi Janey

I'm so sorry I didn't answer alviegal's posts due to family illness . I see the amount of work that was put into finding all this information I really do appreciate everyone's help.

I am so ashamed to admit that due to wrong information given to me by someone on another site that he swore was accurate. I found out that my Ferguson's although they did go to Ireland they never went near Rhode Island. This idiot just took the first match he found and didn't check it out. I have contacted him to tell how angry I am and about all the hard work people on this site did for me to find this family. I have also told him to take off all the wrong information and left a comment for any others to see who use this site.
I want to apologise for not answering the posts and also for wasting everyone's time. I'm so sorry. I will definitely be more careful in the future and not be fooled again.

Just in case Isobel isn't checking back -- she certainly didn't respond to anything alviegal posted, after all that work -- you may want to click on her name and send her a private message. If her email address here is current, she'll get notice of it. No notice is sent of posts in threads.

Hi Isobel I'm reponding, I can't exactly help with your question, but Christina Ferguson was, if I have it right, (my Grt. Aunt), Jane McKerracher was my Gt Grandmother. Jane married Thomas Aitken, 2 of their children also went to Rhode Island New York. There may of being a catch up between the 2 Aitken boys and Christina Ferguson as Christina was their Auntie. I don't know anything of later Rhode Island events, just that my grandfather told my mother about his older brothers going to Rhode Island. I hope you can understand this. I can open up my tree.

I know John McKerracher was I Christina's younger brother who lived wih them at Rhode Island.

I wonder if this is them. She is travelling with 7 year old John?, 3 year old Is ?, 11 year old Ina? McKerracher (male) is next and then 11 month old James? (female) is last. Can't see George though.
Wonder if Ina is really John McKenacher in 1871.

You could ask if anyone has access to Worldwide Ancestry, as easier to search.

Hi Rootsgather,

Tried Ellis Island, can't see them on there. I know the children were in Rhode Island in 1900 but I don't have access to them on ancestry will need to upgrade to see the records. Time to ask for my early Xmas present :)

rootgatherer Report 7 Dec 2010 23:03

Maybe not Ellis Island - it may be too early for there.

Can anyone help? George and Christina Ferguson are on the 1871 Scottish Census they had 3 children John, James, and Jane. They show up on the 1880 US census on Rhode Island with another 2 children Christina C. Ferguson born Rhode Island 1873 and George Ferguson born Rhode Island 1876.

It would appear they left Scotland between the 1871 Scottish Census and Christina being born in 1873 in the US.

I don't know where to look for information on where and when they sailed from I would think Glasgow to New York. they show up in 1900 records for the US I do pay a subscription to another site but it doesn't include passenger lists to the US or actual images residents in the US at that time.

Can anyone help me trace this family please? Any help would be greatly appreciated
