Patricia Report 7 Dec 2010 18:38

Trying to find where my 3xGrandmother was born.
I have an I.G.I record which says it was about 1814 St Georges hanover Square London.
But the census say she was born in Dublin Ireland..
She was married to John Smith 03/11/1835 St Georges Hanover Square London.
I cannot seem to move on and find her parents.
Will be so pleased if someone knows something.
Thanks to your help I have now established that Elizabeth Hollis was born 1813 in Dublin in Ireland ,does anyone know how I can look up this birth in Irish records, love to know who her parents were,Thankyou very much.

Is the IGI record "submitted"? If so, it's likely some boob who just went by a census location and didn't worry about accuracy, just collecting ancestors for posthumous baptism or other purposes.

I haven't been able to get familysearch.org to load for me for several days, so I can't check, unfortunately!

Where do you have the marriage record info from?

Also, would you give you grandmother's name maybe? Nobody else can search for anything without it.

The record doesn't show up on London marriages on Ancestry.

And I can't see an Elizabeth Smith born c1814 in Ireland/Dublin with husband John in the 1841/1851/1861 censuses ...

A good guessing game is always fun!

Meanwhile, if her surname isn't actually known, and if she had children in England and their births were registered, the birth certficate will give it.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Dec 2010 19:10

She's your direct ancestor so what's the name of the child that you descend from?

Got one too -- Patricia, please use the "Add your reply" box down at the bottom so we're not shuffling around to our inboxes, and to save you labour. ;)

Now can you say where the marriage info came from -- the submitted record Adeline referred to? (I have no idea why I can't acess the IGI on line, and it is peeving me.)

Basically, would you just give *all* the info you have, as the guidance when you post recommends? What her children's names and birth years are, where they are living in which census, what her husband's date and place of birth are, etc. If we don't have the info you have to start with, we're going nowhere.

One wonders about these submitted records. How did 4 April 1836 become 3 Nov. 1835?

Rose got that marriage from ancestry

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

Name: Elizabeth Hollis
Spouse Name: John Smith
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 04 Apr 1836
Parish: St Marylebone
County: Middlesex
Borough: Westminster

You can look at the image of the actual page from the Parish Register, and see their signatures (or mark).

Unfortunately, the marriage was before the era when occupations and addresses, and fathers' names and occupations, were on the register.
