As a footnote :

Have since checked this one in Register House and Christina Simpson-- Beatson had two birth certificates .The first stated her parents to be the Beatsons and the other was before it and difficult to read.It was from a Childrens Home, placing her and two siblings, with the Beatsons.

Thanks again everyone for your help

Mary Beatson's death in 1952 gives her husband's name as Andrew, post office superintendent and registered by her son David..........so it's looking certain that the census Janey posted is the correct people.

Mary

Edit: The Christina S Beatson shown on the census posted by Janey IS definitely Andrew and Mary Beatson's daughter born in 1893 Gorbals area and registered as Christina Simpson Beatson.

Mary( or May Sinton) 1856-1952? married Alexander Beatson .He was born 1851 and died 1936.Mary Sinton was Irish and Alexander was born in the Tradeston area of Glasgow. They lived there when they were married too,but I don't know where they ended up,but I suspect it may have been Pollockshaws, again on the south side of Glasgow and and then a better area of Glasgow..Tradeston was a relatively poor area of Glasgow on the south side, not far from the Gorbals area, which most people have heard of.

The Simpsons I know little about, except that they lived in Glasgow around the 1880's 1890's and at least one of them was born in Partick.I believed he worked in the Docks at one time, but a lot of men who did, gained qualifications, such as plumber, joiner etc.

Christina Simpson Beatson as she became known was in a Children's home for a time, with at least one sister and possibly a brother.I have no idea why they ended up there, but the Beatsons then took them from the home and raised them.

Glasgow is separated by the river Clyde and areas such as Partick,Clydebank,Whiteinch and Renfrew are in the North West of Glasgow on the north side of the Clyde.

The Beatsons lived to the south east of Glasgow,on the south side of the River Clyde.I know nothing about the Childrens Home the Simpsons were in,but I do know Christina Simpson-Beatson had two birth certificates, but I have never seen them.

I hope any of that helps.I am still a bit sore, but feeling a lot better thanks

regards

Sorry to hear you had an accident, I hope it wasn't too bad and that you are okay now.

Is there any more info you can give about the Beatson's and Simpsons? Do you know approximately where or when May/Mary Beatson died for example, as even that would give her husbands name so we can find the right family on the census??

What areas are classed as *south side of Glasgow*, I live in the south of England and Janey is in Canada, so we have no idea what these areas are.

Sorry everyone for not checking back on this, but I had a bit of an accident in our back garden, which currently looks like the Arctic. Thanks to all involved for chasing this up for me .May Beatson I suspect was originally Mary.
However, it looks as if you have both hit the nail on the head.It is definitely the Beatson family I am looking for and it appears it may be also the Simpson family.I think that Christina's mother was in Service(Nursery maid) in Partick,Glasgow and there were three children went to the Beatsons to live. The Beatsons lived in the south side of Glasgow the Simpsons in Partick is on the west of Glasgow.

Thanks again and have a happy Xmas and New Year

Yup, another case of someone not checking back for replies, no matter how plainly the guidance presented to new posters says to do that.

Just gotta love these Scots and their name changing! ;-))

1901 census - Turner Simpson, wife Christina, daughter MARGARET aged 5. According to her birth record she was definitely named Christina lol.

Hmmmmm, not sure about this one now. Turner Simpson didn't die until 1928 and the death was registered by his widow Christina.

Need the poster to come back with some more info really.

Hi Janey

Yes it is from the birth record, there is another Christina Simpson born 1896 with father's name James.

Did you see my edit on posting above, father's name Turner Simpson, mother Christina Cochrane, married Dec 1893.

I don't know what areas the south side of Glasgow covers either lol, but there are 4 pages of births for Simpson in the Partick area alone between 1893 - 1904, so without any clues to other names of children, it's needle and haystack time! LOL

Middle initials are unusual in the Scottish census. Sometimes, stepchildren are shown under a stepfather's surname with a middle initial representing their real surname. The two girls in this household are the only ones with an initial, and one is a Christina:

Andrew Beatson 45 - clerk post office
Mary Beatson 45
Robert Beatson 17
Catherine S Beatson 15 - born Glasgow
John Beatson 13
Andrew Beatson 16
Christina S Beatson 8 - born Glasgow
David Beatson 5

Registration district: Tradeston
Civil Parish: Glasgow Pollockshields
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 20, Mcculloch S

I have no idea whether that's the south side of Glasgow!

Is that from a birth record, CM? Could well be the one in the census I posted if so.

I wonder whether May was short for Mary.

Contrary Mary Report 6 Dec 2010 21:14

There is a Christina Simpson born 1896, father, ship yard worker.

Mary

Edit: according to marriage cert his name is Turner Simpson, not James!!

Are you certain about May Beatson? There are no deaths for a May Beatson, do you have an approximate year of death for her?

Trying to find the relatives of two girls and a boy born in Partick,Glasgow around 1900.Their second name was Simpson and their father worked in the shipyards. Not sure of all their first names. One was definitely Christina.

For some reason they were placed in a children's home and later raised by a family called Beatson .All I know about this family is that they stayed on the South side of Glasgow and the mother's name was May Beatson
