I am trying to trace relatives of my great grandmother
Born Christina Arbuckle paterson 06/12/1908
In Scotland Possibly Coatbridge or Aberdeen
I believe her parents were Margaret Arbuckle and John Paterson
Any info on parents/children would be great

Kelly, you will be able to access Christina's marriage at Scotlandspeople. If she married before 1934, you will be able to view / download the register entry online.

Births after 1909 aren't available to view online but if it is not too comon a surname you may be able to pick out possible children from the indexes.

Recent entries (births after 1909, marriages after 1934 and deaths after 1959) can be viewed at the Scotlandspeople centre. You can't take prinouts of these but you can make notes. A day pass for the centre only costs £10 so if you can get a day out in Edinburgh then that is by far the cheapest way to do it as it costs about £10 to buy recent certificates.

Thanks. I think we are definately going to take a trip to Edinburgh in the new year and see what we can dig up there. Its a great idea, I never knew it existed.

Kelly it is worth booking in advance - just to be sure of a seat!

The Guilford Arms do a nice lunch and it is very handy as you won't want to be wasting too much time eating!

Do you know if there is a limit to the number of people who can search with you? I was going to go with my father along with me, would we have to pay for 2 seats or would he be able to sit with me?

You would have to pay for 2 seats Kelly.
It would be worth paying for your Dad anyway as you could take a branch of the family each.

If you haven't been before, it is worth making up a template of a birth, marriage and death certificate to make sure that you don't miss anything when you are making notes. Make sure you note the year, district number and entry number as these are unique numbers and you can use these to file the copies of register entries e.g.

A marriage in Glasgow in 1959, I would file as SSM1959-644_14-123
SSM = Scottish Statutory Marriage
1959 - year marriage took place
644_14 = district number
123 = Entry number

That way you just attach the reference number to both parties of the marriage - you don't need to think about whether to file under the groom or the bride.

Hope this helps and I can tell you that once you have been once you will certainly go again! I have probably been over 100 times in the last 30 years! It is much easier now though with everything computerised! No more stuggling with the big heavy tomes that contained the indexes!

Kelly, I notice that you have another thread about this family - it is better to keep to one thread - in fact it is one of GR's rules - this stops people looking for what has already been found.

When you get a bit further back with your research, you will find the free familysearch sites useful - you can sometimes find records there which can save you credits on scotlandspeople:

Does anyone know how to find out death records of a great uncle who emmigrated to Canada?
I know the year he was born in Scotland and the date he got married in Scotland but nothing after that.
