I am trying to find out the family name who lived at an address in 1911. I'm not very skilled with the 1911 census, to say the least!

The address is URMSTON LODGE, CRUMPSALL, MANCHESTER.

If possible, can you also look for family occupation in the 1901, 1891 and 1881 as well please.

Many thanks - will be back to this later post today. Please don't think I am ignoring in the meantime!

Do you have a road name??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 28 Nov 2010 13:48

Nicola - have had a look on the 1911 and there are 194 streets/addresses in Urmston - Urmston Lodge could be in one of these so need to narrow it down.

There are also 68 streets/addresses in Crumpsall.

Do you have any more info on the address? (That's why you're not meant to scarper after posting!).

Let us know what you have so we can narrow it down.

Sadly not.

I think it must have been a bit out in the country perhaps since the family is listed with ELEVEN servants including a Gardener, Under Gardener, Coachman, etc. So there was probably land around it . . .

Stretford road is the boundary.

Nicola'S Report 28 Nov 2010 13:53

In 1851 it is called URMSTON LODGE. In 1861, the entry for the family states FRONT LANE, URMSTON.

But we believe that these are the same addresses, just ten years apart.

Apparently, it was nicknamed 'The Pineapple House' because it had three huge stone pineapples on the gable ends of the roof. Perhaps that name became used in later years ..........? Just a thought.

If you can give the name of the families in 1851 & 1861, might help get a bearing on it.

Have you tried www.urmston.net?

Name of the family was JOHN HENRY LAW and his wife MARY LAW, with their three daughters: MARY CLAYTON LAW, EDITH ELIZABETH LAW and BEATRICE LAW.

Hope this helps?

A big THANK YOU to MarieCeleste for pointing me in the direction of that website.

What a wonderful sight to see the house where the family lived!

How sad that it is buried under carbon monoxide fumes - will we ever learn??

Big thank you, Tempest.

Can you please tell me how you sourced it in the 1911?

Many thanks.

tempest

tempest Report 28 Nov 2010 16:16

you're welcome

I did an address search on 1911 census, using srt* as the street search in Urmston, this gave me the listings for Stretford Road

I guessed that it would be near to number 145 as it was when we looked at the 1901 census

I then looked at the original return for 145 and then at the top of the window clicked on "list" under the box that says "enumerators book details" . This details the houses in the street and head of each house

There it lists Urmston Lodge right between number 145 Stretford Road and Highfield House.

As it was uninhabited there is no "original return" page for the Lodge

hope this makes sense

Thank you again Tempest.

Not sure I could manage that on my own another time, though! I'm very impressed with your knowledge.
