Hi everyone,

I am looking for further information on Elizabeth Underwood (and her parents) who was married to (Sir or Lord) Arthur Gore. See below for the entry from “The Peerage” website. I am trying to see if Richard (her father) was a brother to Thomas Underwood (b circa 1738 I guess). I think it would be unlikely that Richard would be a brother to Thomas’s son, also Thomas (b 28/5/1761) as the dates aren’t right.

Elizabeth Underwood was the daughter of Richard Underwood and Christiana Goold. She married Arthur Saunders Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran of the Arran Islands, son of Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran of the Arran Islands and Jane Saunders, in February 1781. She died on 5 June 1829 at Brussels, Belgium.

As a result of her marriage, Elizabeth Underwood was styled as Countess of Arran of the Arran Islands in February 1781. From February 1781, her married name became Gore.
Children of Elizabeth Underwood and Arthur Saunders Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran of the Arran Islands.

1. Hon. Saunders Gore3 b. 1783, d. 1813
2. Hon. John Gore3 b. bt 1784 - 1792, d. 1814
3. Cecilia Letitia Underwood, Duchess of Inverness1 b. c 1785, d. 1 Aug 1873
4. Hon. Isabella Gore+3 b. bt 1786 - 1799, d. 30 Nov 1838
5. General Hon. Sir Charles Stephen Gore+3 b. 26 Dec 1793, d. 4 Sep 1869
6. Captain Hon. Edward Gore+3 b. 1797, d. 10 Jan 1879
7. Hon. Julia Gore4 b. c 1800, d. 21 Aug 1891

Cecilia went on to marry the sixth son of King George III.

Many thanks to you all.

Hi everybody,

Following on from the success of reissuing another old posting of mine, I thought I'd try this one as well.

A number of people viewed the original post, but no replies were made. Hopefully there may be some new people on GR who may be able to shed some light on my question.

The Underwood family (my lot anyway) come from London and/or Kersey in Suffolk - it gets a bit fuzzy this far back - probably north of the Thames for London.

Once again, any help or suggestions as to where to look next would be appreciated.

Regards

Chris

So are we looking at Irish records? You dont give a place of birth

Dublin, Ireland, Probate Record and Marriage Licence Index, 1270-1858
Name: Richard Underwood
Spouse: Christiana Goold
Document Year: 1757
Record Type: Marriage Licence

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Name: The Rt Honble Lady Cecilia Latitia Gore
Spouse Name: Sir George Buggin
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 14 May 1815
Parish: St George Hanover Square
Borough: Westminster
Register Type: Bishop's Transcript

I didnt know who the sixth son of King George III was!

Not sure what you're trying to prove.........

Perhaps you could clarify........

Are you hoping that 'your' Underwoods are somehow connected to this bit of the aristocracy?

It's rather a leap - geographically, if nothing else - from Suffolk to the Highlands of Scotland

Augustus, Duke of Sussex 27 January 1773 21 April 1843 married (1) 1793 (in contravention with the Royal Marriages Act 1772) Lady Augusta Murray; annulled 1794; had issue; (2) 1831 (again in contravention of the Act) Cecilia Underwood, Duchess of Inverness; no issue

Cecilia Underwood, 1st Duchess of Inverness (née Lady Cecilia Letitia Gore; c. 1785 – 1 August 1873) was the second wife of Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, sixth son of King George III. As their marriage was in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772, it was considered legally void, and she could not be styled either as the Duchess of Sussex or a Princess. She was created Duchess of Inverness, in her own right, by Queen Victoria, on 10 April 1840

Sorry for being away for a day or two.

Penny: this is a secondary source for the 'Peerage' website entry. Unfortunately it doesn't confirm (or deny) anything about the rest of the Underwood clan.

Gins: I didn't know about the Irish connection. So thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Reggie: I am trying to see if there is a connection between my Underwoods and the Underwoods that are connected (however tenuously) to the aristocracy. Nothing more. It doesn't really advance my tree all that much if there is a connection, it just widens the tree instead of going back in time. Also, your second post comes from the wikipedia entry referred to by Penny.

Thanks for your help so far.

Regards

Chris

I posted it for Gins' benefit................

As for your quest...................the only answer is research
