Best bet is still Robert's marriage cert which will hopefully give you his father's name

K

K Report 9 Nov 2010 19:54

On the Family Search beta site there is also a birth of a Jessy Boak to the same couple at Berwick on 07 Jun 1812 so it looks like the sisters never married

As Robert didn't marry until latter part of 1851, he may be on 1851 census with an indication of his relationship to the household.

Thanks for the replies. I have been told that the father of Robert was also called Robert and that he was a farmer, but, I have not been able to establish this fact.

Easy way to check ....

Did he name his father as Robert (farmer) on his marriage cert to Elizabeth ?

maggiec Report 11 Nov 2010 16:12

Hi Mike, I was informed that the name on his marriage cert. was Robert - farmer. There was a theory that maybe his mother wasn't married at the time of his birth.

Regards Margaret

Mike * Report 11 Nov 2010 16:51

In that case I would treat the father reference on the marriage cert with caution.

I have an ancestor who named his father as George on his marr cert. (same name as himself)
I could never find any other evidence.
He was brought up by his "grandfather" John. (not his mother's father)
Turns out his birth cert showed no father and John had no sons named George.
