I wonder if Clarie is Nellie and not Clarissa and Sissy Louie?
I know I'm clutching at straws but it is a possibility.

All I know is that Ron called his aunts Aunt Clari and Aunt Sissie
but bear in mind he hadn't seen them after the age of about 14 I guess so he might remeber their names wrong. Unfortunately Ron died recently and this was all he could ever tell me anyway.

They were definately from London Battersea area as Ron and in turn his son (my partner) were born in the same area then in Hammersmith.

When I spoke to Ron before he died he said his dad Sidney only had two sisters and that he didn't know of any other others.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can find anythng as Ron's birth certificate does say Sidney Skeates but that is all we have to go on.

Ron was born on 3rd Jan 1931 as Rnald Douglas Brown, father Sidney Skeates and I can't find anything at all.
Both were from London and Sidney was from Battersea area.
I think he was born about 1904

I've come back to my brick wall and hoping for some help. Sidneys sister Clarissa was born about 1907 from details from a photo.

As all mentioned people are no longer living I hoped to be able to get help as was aware of living people gettting mentioned of which I had previosly deleted those posts.

Can anyone help me find Sidney and his sister Clarissa (Clary() and Cissy on a cencus please?

Thanks Gwyn, sorry its taken me so long to reply!

I have found out that the Skeates were romany gypsies as well so this may be why I can't find out much about the Skeates family.
Looking at the children's birth certificates gives very little info, just names and no address or occupation.

I am trying to find any records with Sidney and his sisters Sissie and Clary but as I don't know the actual names then this might make it a bit tricky.
This is my biggest brick wall yet and its a bit of a sod!

If the birth of Anthony is correct, perhaps the siblings hadn't yet been born when the children's home event happened.
Maybe the address on Anthony's birth certificate would be an area to consider?

As an update, after finding a document I now know that Catherine Brown did not marry Sidney. Their son Ronald was given to Sidney's sister Cissie to look after by the local authority and were given instructions that neither Sidney or Catherine were allowed to have any say in Ronald's upbringing. The document does not mention the other two siblings at all. There is also mention of a short stay in a childrens home in London but doesn't say where.

This family is very interesting to me but a right puzzle and a half!

Ruth

Ruth Report 4 Nov 2010 19:43

thanks for that.
I don't think I'm going to get very far with Catherine's family as they were gypsies and didn't register half if any of their childrens births.

However I now have family photos which say child with Aunty Sissy and child with Aunt Clary which are Sidney's sisters.
Does this help find the right Sidney.

This is the only marriage for a Sidney Skeates I can find and he married Ada Wright but it puts him in the right place at the right time.

I now know the fathers name was Sidney Skeates, and his wfe Catherine usually went by the name Kate

Astra

Astra Report 2 Nov 2010 13:09

If you don't already have them it may help to get one of the birth certificates. It would give you the father's name if you don't already know it and also would say if Catherine had been married before

Ruth

Ruth Report 2 Nov 2010 11:03

I think finding the mother's details is going to be impossible as Brown is such a common name and it looks like she didn't marry the father although it must be the same father as all the sons look the same apart from being different ages.
Also their sons (1 being my partner) also look alike!

Astra

Astra Report 1 Nov 2010 20:56

That's lovely.

Ruth

Ruth Report 1 Nov 2010 20:50

she changed her name by deed poll. My partner found out as a teenager that they weren't married. They officially married a bit later after that.

Astra

Astra Report 1 Nov 2010 20:47

Thought that may be the one. They married quite late. Her surname is interesting had she been married before or is it just coincidence?

Astra

Astra Report 1 Nov 2010 20:25

If she 'married' quite soon after he was born then he would possibly have been raised in her partners name. It's not uncommon for that to happen.
Who did he marry?

Ruth

Ruth Report 1 Nov 2010 20:22

thats interesting, he married as skeates, and my partner his son is also skeates
