Hazel Report 26 Oct 2010 01:09

I would be v. grateful if somebody could look up John Joseph Hanks in old Canadian passenger lists - I think he appears on at least one. He was born in Birmingham in 1905. I believe other Hanks siblings may be on these also, especially Harry Hanks. Any info would be great.

Cheers,
Hazel.

Lorraine - Thanks so much for finding that info (I'm in the US, hence the lag in thanking you as I went to bed after the request!). Is there any info about his brother Harry Hanks or sister Edith Amelia Hanks? There were also siblings Thomas and Doris Hanks, but they might be harder to find.

Regards,
Hazel.

Thanks so much for this. This piece of info actually solved a big mystery and started another one. I had always wondered what happened to Ellen Smith, the half-sister of Edith Haile (mother, not daughter), but her name was just too ordinary for me to follow up. So it appears she married a William Deakin and went to Canada. But I found her marriage and she married as Ellen Tingle - long story but it means that her father was not who I thought he was. Any ideas what happened to William and Ellen Deakin in Toronto? Do they appear in census records? Obviously I need to take out a better subscription, but I never thought I had so many relatives in North America!

All this info led me to a death for John Joseph Hanks in Florida, but the rest are a mystery.

Great work, thanks!

Hazel - our censuses have a 92 y closure, so the next release (of 1921) will be in 2014. In the meantime use the links at:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html

Next year, Ancestry will turn over their indices and digitalizations for LAC to put on their free website. This will give better access to 1861/71 and the prairies only 1916. Ancestry's search facility is better than the others, so it still pays to search at Ancestry even if you don't have the sub to see full details. The details they do reveal (like county) help in other searches. AG do have a couple of nice features - they give a surname list at the province, district, and subdistrict levels. They also sometimes have a "link" field on a record which looks up that person other censuses.

This will cover all LAC's holdings from 1851-2 on except 1870 MB and 1891 Victoria BC's special census. LAC doesn't hold most Newfoundland pre-1949 - for these see:

Hazel Report 28 Oct 2010 00:35

Thank you everybody so much for all this information - most of which I thought I'd never find. This has given me a lot to work with. I found a marriage for Ellen Mabel Alice Deakin (the one born in 1906) in Toronto in 1926.

One of the remaining mysteries from this batch (aside from all the Canadian BMDs I have yet to discover) is what happened to William Tingle - maybe you lot will have success where I have failed for ages.

I had the information from the 1891 census but it is hard to know what is correct:

Hannah Haile 40 - she started off Hannah Maria Curtis, born in Stroud in 1850, married an Amos Tingle who died (they had two boys, William and Jacob), then she had Ellen Tingle 3 years after his death, father unknown. Then she married a John Smith, no children to my knowledge. Then she "married" a John Haile or Hale (but I have never found a marriage for them and John Smith was alive and well elsewhere) with whom she had two girls, Mary Anne and Edith Haile. I'm almost certain she died Hannah M. Smith in 1931 in Westbury on Severn.

Elan Haile 17 - this is actually William Tingle
Ellen Haile 12 - this is actually Ellen Tingle, who married William Deakin
Mary A Haile 7 - died young
Edith Haile 6 - married Thomas Hanks

On various census records, the children are named Smith, Tingle, Haile or Hale - all very confusing. Jacob Tingle died young but William Tingle (b. 1873 in Cinderford/Westbury on Severn) is last seen on the 1891 census as Elan Haile - poor transcription. I just can't find what happened to William at all after 1891.

If anybody has access to the 1911 England census, I'd love them to look up Ellen Deakin living in Birmingham, born 1879, and see who else is in the household.

Thanks for any help!

Was hoping to find some mention of her children...

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 about Hannah Maria Smith
Name: Hannah Maria Smith
Probate Date: 20 Jan 1931
Death Date: 5 Jan 1931
Death Place: Gloucestershire, England
Registry: Gloucester

States;

"Of Abbey Street, Cinderford, Gloucestershire. Widow died 5th January. Probate Gloucester 20th January 1931 to Frank Dykins auctioneer and valuer. Effects £204 7ds 10d"

So at least you know it's her.... but drat no info about William!!!!

There are concession maps at:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php

The map of London Twp is rotated such that the Western boundary is at the top.
The concession strips are numbered at the bottom, but one has to count up for lots.
(Richard Carry has a lot on Conc 11 Lot 8. Ilderton is on Con 11 Lot 26)
These are 100 acre lots. There are 80 chains in a mile and 10 in a furlong. These lots look like 3 fur x 3 fur = 900 sq chains, but this is only 90 acres so they must be a bit bigger somehow.

Hello Dianna and John,

You have posted on an old thread and it is possible that Lorraine may not see this.

It would be better if you could start a new thread of your own asking for a passenger list look up and put the details on there. There are several members who should be able to help you.

Regards. Cx
