I found an Ann Varley Warrington from Kent...not an immediate relative but interesting the Varley Warrington name...but as you suggest it may be a common name in those parts.

Thanks Sylvia. I have taken photos of the various homes in Balmain where they lived. Charles also appear to be living with his sister when her home is burgled as reported in Sydney Morning Herald 1850.

I found a few references on Henry Warrington in New Navy Lists and The Oriental Herald . I thought there might be a site on the British in Ceylon, but no luck so far.

I think the Newington ones have to be my Henry and Martha's , as it was Charles Barham Warrington who died in Balmain 10 May 1887. Newspaper reports have him referred to as Helen Chilcott's brother. This is very exciting.

Boronia Report 30 Oct 2010 01:03

Thank you so much everyone. I am basing Helens age & birthplace on her death certificate, 31 May 1900 Balmain NSW Australia.
On her son Henry Chilcott's death cert 21 Jan 1920, Sydney his date and place of birth are 5 Jan 1844 in Trincomalee.

As Henry Warrington was Naval Storekeeper in Trincomalee, it makes sense that even if he remarried his children may have remained in Ceylon.
Fred Chilcott was a Master Mariner, usual run was from Calcutta to Sydney., so geographically it is quite possible a stop in Trincomalee would allow him and Helen Warrington to meet.
How would I track death cert for Martha Warrington if she died in Trincomalee 1838?

Noooo ... I was looking on the 1841 to see whether the ones I had posted could be *ruled out*.

I think the Newington batch is separate from the Kent marriage, and the Kent marriage is most likely to be Boronia's people -- but Warrington's are kind of a dime a dozen around there, so no way of saying at this point.

Not sure what your sources for the Ceylon events are, Boronia -- is there a marriage record? and it doesn't give any info about the parties, e.g. ages and fathers?

they wouldn't be on the 1841 ............. Boronia says they arrived in Trincomalee in 1838

Kent, then -- see, you did know more. ;)

Bidborough is about 15 miles WSW of Maidstone, and Helen was born about about 1822. So that marriage 1820 is not outside the realm of possibility, and could be worth considering -- although I suspect that record is something "submitted" and would need confirmation from parish records.

Can't find any births to go with. But there's no Henry & Martha couple in the 1841 census to match that marriage, or a Henry or Martha separately/widowed, but there are a lot of possible variables between 1820 and 1841.

For the Newington births, the 1841 census has this household

Civil Parish: St Mary Newington
Henry Warrington 40 (dob could be 1797 to 1801)
Susan Warrington 40
Mary Warrington 6
Victoria Warrington 3
Thomas Hudson 15

and I might suspect that's the father of those four boys, with a second wife.

Sorry. I don't know very much, in fact what you have sent looks great.

Martha and Henry Warrington had at least two children: Helen born 1822 Maidstone, England and Charles born abt 1826. They arrived Trincomalee in 1838 and Martha died within months. Henry appears to have marroed Elizabeth Sargent in 1839 in Ceylon. I'm assuming they married in England before Helen was born. I don't kknow when Henry died but Elizabeth seems to have remarried in 1857.

Helen Warrington married Frederick Chilcott abt 1841 in Trincomalee. Helen Maria was born abt 1842 and Henry Frederick 5 Jan 1844, both in Trincomalee. They moved to NSW Australia in 1846.

I hope this is a little clearer. Many thanks , Boronia

You haven't given any dates to help, e.g. the birth years for the children, even approximate. When his wife died doesn't tell us when they married or about when they might have been born!

Two things maybe worth considering, if the dates are anywhere near.

I'm trying to trace Henry Warrington whose wife Martha died in Trincomalee 1838. Two children at least, Helen and Charles, both who much later died in Australia . Henry was a Navy Storekeeper and Victualler. He may have re married a Elizabeth Sargent. Helen married Frederick Chilcott. a master mariner, in Trincomalee, in the early 1840's.
