Hello....mgnv
Do not know who you are or where you are located but you deserve a big THANK YOU.
Using a combination of the last two web sites on your above messages I was able to locate the death record for my Grandfather (the son noted above) who we thought died at the World Fair in Chicago in 1933.
We were wrong, he died in Aug 12 1931 in Chicago and his name was spelled Cockrane. Using Ancestry, which I a member, I was able to get a copy of the document including the name of his wife and where he was buried.
Never thought his name would be misspelled on a death certificate but it confirmed his date of birth at 1879.
Now to use what you have given me to track down his marriage certificate from Ontario (I live in BC) in an attempt to trace/identify his parents.
PS yes I am familiar with LAC and LDS.
Thanks,
Lorne Cochrane

Lorne - I presume you're familiar with the LAC gateway: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
I didn't look in 1861-71 - I don't have the right Ancestry sub, and it's hard to reconstruct households from the LDS hits. I'm really waiting until next year as: "All census returns from 1851 to 1916 have been digitized and are currently available on multiple websites. By the summer of 2011, all digital images and indexes to those census returns will be available on Library and Archives Canada website." If you can't wait and you don't have an appropriate Ancestry sub, then check out if your local library does. Alternatively, it is free at LDS FHC's - to locate one, search in the centre col at:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp [PS give them a call first]
I think that LDS, LAC and Ancestry all use the same transcription for 4/4/1881. I couldn't readily spot them then - I'm not even sure which province they're in, but they ought to be somewhere (ON I guess). My preference is to search on Ancestry first, even though I've no sub. (It helps to know if they're spelled as Cochrin or whatever, e.g. and what county they're in, even if AG does use a different transcription) For the image links, I've been using:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html
There ought to be a b.cert for Wm, I wonder if it exists under Wm Hitchcock.
http://www.deathindexes.com/illinois/cook.html # You can also search the death index at Ancestry if you have a subscription: * Cook County, Illinois Death Index, 1908-1988 2.7 million entries (requires subscription fee)
http://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/Search.aspx Full Name Married To Record Type File Number Event Date COCHRANE, WILLIAM F Death 6032557 12/11/1933
I don't know when the fair was, nor if that's your guy.

mgnv,
Thanks, I believe your first statement is very true. I had not observed this tendancy before. Thank you. So our girl was born in NS.
You are so knowledgeable.
If I can direct our attention to another issue. Trying to locate the birth certificate of the son of Wm or William Cochrane and Ellen (last name possibly Hitchcock),
The assumption being that the son's birth certificate will identify the name of his father and the maiden name of his mother.
Their son William Cochrane, my grandfather, was born in toronto Ontario 1879. He was THOUGHT to have died in Chicago while attending the World's Fair in 1933. I have located his marriage notice and reference to him in the 1891 census. But no birth certificate/notice.
thank you
Lorne

Lorne - it's very unusual for a foreign birth to name anything other than the country. I posted the URL for the 1891 census of Yt Ytephen's Ward - if you look at the previous household, you'll see that their elder son has a marital status of Yingle, and he was born in the U.Y.
EDIT For comparison, this enumerator does record the name Young at least 3 times - see:

mgnv...thanks for the feed back.
Re: NS or US:
The 1891 Census document that I have for Ellen Cochrane has a birthplace of NY (US). A note attached indicates it should read NS. Guess I am cautious and unsure of the attached note on the 1891 census placed there by an Ancestry member.
Thanks,
Lorne

Lorne why do you think she's born in the US - she gives NS in 1891, 1901, 1911?
For the spelling, I wouldn't pay it no nevermind. For comparison, here's some 1841/1901 Scottish counts: Johnston 12531/17018 Johnstone 1230/5504 I just can't see Johnstone outbreeding by such an extent, and concluded there must be a large degree of respelling. (My g gran was Elizabeth Johnston, and her grandaur was Elizabeth Johnstone Smith, say.)
Canadian census give two ages - one can be computed from the dob, and the other is explicit. They don't always agree, so check them. (My gg gran appeared on 4 censuses 1841-1871, plus her marr and death gives 6 ages for her. At most 2 are correct If I believe them, then the others are wrong, and if I believe any of the others, then there's 5 wrong. The only thing I have much trust in on her censuses is ages of infant kids.)
The actual census date is given on the sheet - the census is supposed to reflect the status on the nominal census date - see: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.002-e.html
Are Helen and Ellen different names?
Her age does bounce about quite a lot, but both 1901, 1911 her birthday is in April, and she is from NS - I think it's the same woman all the time.

Thank you to those who have replied. I am relatively inexperienced when it comes to putting toghether a family tree and appreciate your assistance as I have been frustrated with the lack of progress locating my ancestors. You have provided me with a wealth of information which I am trying to comprehend.
Several questions come to the forefront:
1. Should I be overly concerned regarding the dropping of the letter "e" in the name Cochrane? Are the located results the same family or two different families?
2. The father's birth date appearing on the documents ranges from 1847 to 1850. Should I be concerned by this as most of the other information seems to tie in correctly with what I know.
3. Ellen's name is spelled Helen on the 1901 census but I assume because of the similarity in names it is the same individual.
4. Ellen is reported to have been born in either NS or US. What is the likelyhood that this type of error would have been made on a census document.?
5. Helen's date of birth on the 1901 census is reported as 1860, 1851 on the 1911 census and 1856 on the 1891 census. Should I be concerned by the big difference when the father and son dates are almost exact matches.
6. I am begnning to question the Ellen Hitchcock connecton due to the information submitted on the marriage document. The ages are too far apart.
7. I believe it was Jansmith who suggested that the son's birth cert 1879 would give mother's maiden name. Does anyone know or can locate the birth certificate for:
William Cochrane B: 1879 Toronto (I think) Ontario, D: est Aug 8 1931/32/33 in Chicago USA His parents are: Wm/William Cochrane and Ellen ?

Margaret, Thank you very much for the information. I do believe you have located his (my great grandfather) death notice as it matches the data that I have acquired. I assume, or you would have told me, that no other information was located regarding his death.
I appreciate your respose very very much. Thank you.
My challenge now is to track down his parents who I BELIEVE are Robert and Martha Jane (last name unknown) Cochran (e may be missing) from Gilford in the County of Down Ireland. If they are his parents Robert died in 1852.
My thought process is that to properly identify his parents I need to know more about William. such as:
When did he come to Canada (a possible census record I have indicates 1860.) Who did he marry? One possible record I have located indicates it might be Ellen Hitchcock 1851/56-1912. His wife's name was Ellen (last name no known). (I am told that often marriage records list the parents name and their location of birth.)
Bye for now and thank you again.

Searching for any information on:
1. Wm or William Cochrane, Born 1847 or 1849, possibly in January, in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Travelled to Canada in 1860 or 1870. He died in Toronto Ontario Canada October 1918. His wife was Ellen (last name unknown) 1851/56-1912. She maye been born in Nova Scotia or USA died in Toronto Ontario at 163 Seaton Street. Especially interested in his Canadian marriage records or Irish birth records as they may show name of his parents. He had one son that I know of called William Cochrane 1879-1931.
2. Wm or William Cochrane's father is thought (I lack substantial proof that this is his father) to be Robert Cochran(e), b: Ireland/Northern Ireland and married to Martha Jane (last name unknown). He died in 1852 at Gilford in the County of Down Ireland. Especially interested in any records that may indicate a link to William Cochrane his son.
thank you.
