My gt gt grandmother Rose Ann Wright was born in the Union Workhouse, Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincs 9.12.1855. Does anyone know if the RO at Lincs will have any info on inmates (I also know her parents' names)? Would it say why she was born there and apparently abandoned there by her parents? Have a day off work tomoz but its a long trip (2 hrs each way) if they have no info. Thanks for any help. |

Amanda, I assume you have found her on some census reports, hence you believe her to be abandoned? I can't see her. Have you looked for parents? |

Hi, Thanks for the quick replies. I can't find her in the 1861 or 1871 census using Genes (but a possibility in Leicester Female Asylum which was like an orphanage/domestic servant training school in 1871 but this has pob as Hinckley, Leics.) This is quite likely to be her as she lived here again after her husband died young leaving her with children. |

My advice would be to give them a ring before travelling...........some of the records are very sparse, and may not even mention individuals. |

Hi, I bought her birth cert to be sure. Her mother's name is Ann Wright formerly Carroll and her father's Abraham Wright. He was a sergeant in the South Lincoln Militia. Her parents married 8 years before she was born. On her marriage cert she says her father Abraham was a soldier but deceased which shows she knew his name although she never apparently lived with them according to the censuses. She lived to the good old age of 93 and my mum can just remember her but doesn't know anything useful! Thanks for your help. |
