Lorraine Report 25 Oct 2010 11:32

Hi Everybody,Much to my disappointment I have come to the conclusion, after having received the two birh certificates of Henry John Bailey, born St. Giles, that neither of them is my grandfather, Henry Bailey. So I am now back to square one to start from scratch with my search, from a different angle. In my grandfather's army papers, which I obtained from the National Archives, Kew, it stated that his next of kin was Charles Bailey, father, 35, Burton (or Buxton) Crescent, London, W.5 (or W.S) but this information was crossed out sometime between 1893 and 1902, making it difficult to read, and underneath is written: no living relatives. Friend: Styles Willis, 17 Moray Road, Tollington Parik, London. I have traced Styles Willis as having been born in Greenwich area. My grandfather joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1893 at Aldershot and was discharged in South Africa in 1902, having been sent here for the duration of the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) He settled here permanently at the end of the war. I have no idea who this Charles Bailey was, as we have always been under the impression that he never knew his parents, but perhaps he did know the name of his father but never met him. I have studied every Henry Bailey for the last ten years, but have been unable to trace my grandfather, so I am now wondering whether he could have been registered or christened as either Henry Charles Bailey or Charles Henry Bailey (He always thought he was born c. 1873, and mentioned that he had grown up in the east of London(Greenwich, perhaps?) Below is a list of the possibilities I have extracted from the Free BMD. Would anybody be willing to try and find any of these nine entries and see whether there is a Charles Bailey listed as the father? Perhaps a baptism record could give us a possible clue? Here are the nine entries:
1.Henry Charles Bailey Sept. ! 1873 Marylebone1a 547
2. Henry Charles Bailey June Q.1874 Islington 1b 275
3. Henry Charles Bailey March Q. 1876 Kensington 1a 30
4. Charles Henry Bailey June Q. 1870 Whitechapel 1c 325
5. Charles Henry Bailey June Q. 1872 1872 Kensington 1a 90
6. Charles Henry Bailey June Q. 1873 St. Savious Southwark 1d 90
7. Charles Henry Bailey June Q. 1874 Whitechapel 1c 337
8. Charles Henry Bailey Dec. Q. 1875 St. Saviours Southwark 1d 148
9. CharlesHenry Bailey June Q. 1875 Islington 1b 344

I much appreciated all the help everybody has given me in the past, and after ten years of searching I am now clutching at straws!

Hi Margaret

Yes, thingsare a bit complicated. The birth certificate for Henry John bailey born 15th September, 1871, states that his father is a plumber, but that his mother's name is Ellen, not Anne! The reason why I am looking for somebody having been born in St. Giles is because the Henry Bailey admitted to Strand Union Children's Establishment, Edmonton, in 1878 was sent there by the Parish of St. Giles. As far as I can make out, none of the people we have found so far fit into the picture. Especially as both the Henry John Bailey born in 1870 and the one born in 1871 both had brothers and sisters, and were presumably still living together as families in 1881(whereas the Henry Bailey from St. Giles had been living in Edmonton since 1878). Can one find out when the parents of the two St. Giles born Henry John Baileys died? If they were both still alive in 1881 then I am on the wrong track My grandfather always thought he was an only child. The Henry John Bailey born in 1870, father John Bailey and mother Frances Alice Bailey) gives his father's occupation asGas Fitter and Bell Hager (Master)

Sorry, Lorraine, if I'm confusing you as much as I'm confusing myself, I'm no help at all.
Checking back I see that the Henry that married Frances Alice was a blacksmith at time of marriage but then on birth certificate you have he's a gas fitter.

MargaretM Report 13 Oct 2010 18:42

This looks like Henry & Frances Alice in 1881 but, dagnabbit, he's a plumber! Isn't he supposed to be the gas fitter?

Hi Potty
I have just received the birth certificates of both Henry Baileys born in St Giles North, as folows:

Henry John Bailey
When and where born: 5 November, 1870. 67 New Compton Street
Father: Henry Bailey
Mother: Frances Alice Bailey formerly Marchant
Occupation of father: Gas Fitter and Bell Hanger (Master)
RegistrationDistrict: St. Giles
1870 Birth in the Sub-district of St. Giles North
County of Middlesex.

Can anybody find this family in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses?

The other birth certificate I received was:

Henry John Bailey
Whenand where born: 15th September,1871 Che...Mews
Father:Henry Bailey
Mother Ellen Bailey formerly Rogers
Occupation of father: Plumber
1871 Birth in the Sub-district of St Giles North in the County ofMiddlessex
Registration district St. Giles.

Can anybodyfind the marriage of Harry Bailey and Frances Alice Marchant?

Also, can thefirst family be found in the1871Census,and both families in the 1881Census?
I cannot find theMarriage of Henry Bailey and FrancesAlice, nor their deaths. If both families are found in the 1881Census then neither of their sons, Henry Bailey, is my grandfather, as I then cannot prove that the boy admitted to Strand Union Children'sEstablishment Edmonton in 1878
was one of these boys, born in St. Giles.

Hi Londonbelle,

I found the following death in Free BMD

Death March 1870
Clara Bailey Aged 21 Kensington 1a 78

But that was before HenryJohn Bailey was christened in Dec. 1871.
Perhaps an incorrect entry somewhere?

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 9 Oct 2010 17:53

Hi Londonbelle,

No, Henry Bailey married in Cape Town, South Africa in 1903. I have his marriage certificate, which only stated that both he and his wife came from England.

Thanks ,Potty. After having searched for grandfather's "roots" for ten years I have still not solved the mystery. Perhaps he wasn't orphaned at an early age after all but decided to forget his past and start a new, very successful life in South Africa. Wil this mystery ever be solved?

Did your grandfather know his actual birthdate? There's this one born 19 Nov.1871:

This is the first time I have found this Henry Bailey in the 1871 Census. Grandfather told me many years ago that he grew up in the east of London, "in the shadow of London Bridge and Tower of London" and was placed in an orphanage at an early age. Is it possible to find out where and when his parents died, orphaning him at an early age? Henry's age in the Census sounds correct, as the Henry Bayley admitted to the Edmonton orphanage in April, 1878 was aged 8. Perhaps after his parents died he was admitted from the St. Giles area by an "uncle"?
His surname was spelt Bailey in the 1881 Census, Edmonton. Or can another orphaned Henry Bailey be traced in the Middlesex area in the 1881 Census? He might have been born a year or two later, as he didn't know his exact date of birth.

Unfortunately I do not know my grandfather's father's name - neither did he! My grandfather never found out who his parents were.
I know grandfather was placed in an orphanage at an early age, and there is a Henry Bailey/yiley admitted to The Strand Union Children's Establishment, Edmonton, from St. Giles area, in 1878. I am trying to find out whether I can prove that one of the two births registered in St. Giles in 1870 and 1871 was my grandfather. In the 1881 Census Henry Bailey, from Middlesex, was an inmate of The Strand Union Children's Establishment. Is it possible to trace him in the 1871Census,without know his father's name?

Potty Report 9 Oct 2010 15:51

The one born 1870 should be on the 1871 census. Do you know your grandfather's father's name?

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 9 Oct 2010 15:48

There are two births registered in Free BMD for a Henry John Bailey. I am trying to find out whether one of them was my grandfather.
They are
Henry John Bailey 1871 Dec. St. Giles 1b 524
or
Henry John Bailey 1870 Dec St. Giles 1b 533

If anybody can find a record of the baptism of either of the above people in Parish Records it could help me who and where they were baptised, and who the parents were.
