Laura Report 9 Oct 2010 14:33

Hello again, got stuck on William James, bn in 1852 in Ripon Yorks, beieve he may have married Hannah Coucill in Ripon in 1871 and may have fathered Louisa Warwick in 1878. Seems to be a huge gap between marriage and children and I lost track of them after 1881, can't believe they all died!
Help if possible please, much appreciated.

Hi, got some certificates, got the 1861 census and the 1871 copy also, think the age is wrong since he couldn't be 14 if Edwin is 16, it's unclear on the 1871 census as it is crossed out, age that is, but being born in 1852 would make him 19 surely.
I am not sure that he did marry Hannah, it would mean he moved from Ripon to Bolton in the same year which is a big move for a 19 year old house painter surely?

Plenty of people moved around all over the country at that time - start of the railways helped.

You need to start with what you know for a fact. How have you got back to William James Warwick?

This can't be my William, in 1881 he would have been 29 not 34, thank you anyway.

Laura

Laura Report 9 Oct 2010 15:06

Not sure what you mean by how far back? Have certificate of his parents marriage, only got census from then, one of his brothers is one of my direct ancestors and have that line confirmed. I just began to go sideways along the siblings as I connected with one of the other decendants which got me curious.
Christopher & Mary Ann seem to have been awfully unlucky with the mortality rate of their children. x

From Lancsbmd - looks like he did marry Hannah:

WARWICK William J COUCILL Hannah Farnworth & Kearsley Parish Church, St John The Evangelist Bolton

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 9 Oct 2010 15:10

If they are not direct ancestors what made you think that he MAY have married Hannah Coucill? What made you think he MAY have fathered Louisa Warwick in 1878? You have to start with facts - not just something that you think he did.

The Bolton marriage is the only one that I can see for a William James Warwick. I would get that certificate and see if his father is who you think it should be and go from there.

Well that ties in the Farnworth & Bolton connection, his younger brother moved to Bolton as well so maybe it is my William James, but, where the heck did he go to?

Laura

Laura Report 9 Oct 2010 15:17

True, following another line but lost the contact so can't authenticate now sadly.

The 1871 census which has William James transcribed as age 14 is the right family - his age is probably 18 on the image, and the family are already in Bolton so it makes the marriage to Hannah seem to be the right one.

Hannah is with her sister Harriet, and there is a Louisa which ties in with the family I was following ...... and of course the family were in Farnworth, must've been a brain fade moment there, sorry about that.
Many thanks

Just an update to the above, we have found William James on the passenger list going from Liverpool to Philidelphia in 1881, which explains his absence from the census.
Hannah & Louisa appear to have followed, presumably that same year as Hannah's age is given as 30 on the passenger list but Louisa is shown as 11?
This must be an error since she would quite clearly only be 2 years old, and, in the 1900 US census, her birth year is quite clearly given as 1879.
Unless there is a second Hannah & Louisa Warwick since, in 1885 Hannah Warwick (wife) is shown on another passenger list travelling from Liverpool to Philly with daughter Louisa who is now just 6 years old, problem is, Hannah is shown as 32 wheareas, if she is the same one as appears in the 1881 census she would have been 35.
I must assume that some of the records are not as accurate as one would hope.
