William Burles married Mary Ann Lock on 23/09/1838 at St Peter & St Paul Church, Milton. He was the son of William Burles, grocer. Ann Burles was one of the witnesses. In 1851 Mary describes herself as a mariner's wife. It looks like William was a son of the original pair and Mary their d-in-law. |

Yes, I think they must be. The father could have been off on a boat at census time. |

I suspect the younger children 1841 are grandchildren - is that what you are thinking too? |

Incidentally Peter is Mary the daughter or daughter in law of William and Ann? The 2 young children Thomas and Mary were bap at different churches in Gravesend but their parents are given as William Burles and his wife Mary. That William was a waterman. |

The pub is at 1 Terrace Street and is in all the censuses. It is only named in the last three and then it was The Greyhound Tavern. |

That is interesting brummiejan as someone told me there is a connection to the Burles family in Essex but I can never find it, maybe this is the missing link? Will take me some time to check the parish records to try and tie the two up. Thank you |

Have you checked out Familysearch site/ Just a guess but I wonder if they might be from Essex? A bit speculative though: |

Ok thank you. I believe they both died before the 1851 census, but need to double check that again. Thanks for help |

Sadly no. Birthplaces not normally given if out of county, as both of them were. I assume you have looked for them 1851? |

That's the family, thank you Jan. I don't suppose it gave the name of the pub at all or whether William and Ann were from the area as having trouble locating their marriage record in the parish registers. |

Please can anyone help me, I worked on my family tree last year and on my notes I wrote that I found William Burles and his wife Ann on the 1841 census and that he was a publican, however for the life of me I can not find these details again, so hoping someone with great searching skills can find them for me again and tell me the address they are living at please. |
