Geoff....Looking again at the NSW list...the names listed are not ones I would associate with RC Burns or Fitzgerald..are you sure they both were RC.
Did they sail from Devon to NSW...?

james ernest (byrnes) according to his marriage certificate and i assume "T" for thomas [married Una May Jefferay, 11th april 1908]

(strange thing on the marriage certificate was father listed as Thomas Byrnes - not Burns) (there was a couple of insolvency notices in the papers about that era for a Thomas Burns though - perhaps the reason for the name change or just whoever was doing the registration got the spelling wrong - there was a prominent family of Byrnes's in the area apparently not related to us)

and yes, all those births in nsw

Geoff...I assume all the above details are Aus.?
I will try to see if i can find anything for Kilcalf West....only a few (5) dwellings listed 1901 census so imagine it wasn't a great deal different back ways in the earlier part of the 1800's.
Do you know what the James ...E.T...stood for (1883) ?

Geoff...My post has somehow crossed with yours...!!

Eringobragh1916 Report 22 Oct 2010 13:34

Geoff...This may be a possibility....

Have found a James "Burns" on Griffiths Valuation 1848-1851 who is listed as leasing land from Richd.Gumbledon Esq. in the Townland of Kilcalf West. Civil Parish of Tallow.
There are 3 other Jas.Burns but they are not for the Tallow CP.

regarding James Burns

this is what i have found that could be a possible
Tenant
Family Name 1 BURNS
Forename 1 JAMES
Landlord
Family Name 2 GUMBLETON
Forename 2 RICHD.
Location
County WATERFORD
Barony COSHMORE AND COSHBRIDE
Union LISMORE
Parish TALLOW
Townland KILCALF, WEST
Place Name KILCALF, WEST
Place Type TOWNLAND
Publication Details
Position on Page 38
Printing Date 1851
Act 9&10
Sheet Number 28,33
Map Reference 10

ships record to Australia of the "Zemindar" in 1857 notes the following

Thomas Burns - age 31 - Waterford - RC - R/W = both (father [james] dead - mother [johanna] living waterford)
Johanna Burns - age 27 - Connaught - RC - R/W=no ( william & ellen? - father living in connaught - mother dead)
Thomas Burns - infant (under 1) - Devon

wife of thomas, Johanna's maiden name may have been Fitzgerald

name changed to Byrnes with the birth of James Ernest Byrnes in 1883 (son of young thomas) (some of this family registered as Burns, some as Byrnes, confusing!)

Geoff..The problem you have is not uncommon due to the actual demographics involved also the surname..You are "Burns" but was that the original or the anglised version of the name..(as transcribed)...? Try widening your search to include "Byrnes".
When it states Tallow... does that mean the within Civil Parish of Tallow or Tallow "Townland" ?
Tallow Civil Parish consists of 28 "Townlands " including Tallow itself....so you need to be finding out exactly which townland your "Burns" were living...
It also didn't follow that the "Ecclesiastical Parishes" (for Church Records) were the same as the Civil Parishes....!!!
Burns are relatively easy compared to O'Brien...!!!
How do you know Thomas' mother was still alive 1857...what was her Christian name...?
