Hi. I have a great uncle who died in ww1.I know about him but on the war memorial next to him is George.H.Spiller who could possibly be his brother. His number is 254753 of the London Reg` and he died o1/09/1918 and he comes from Taunton, somerset. If his parents were George and Jane then there is a connection.I was wondering if someone on Ancestry could check to see if there were any service records on him to just confirm his parents names. Thanks very much

It is him i`m sure but we have no connection with paddington so he may be from a different family in Taunton. I`ll think i`ll try the obituaries in the local papers from the records office, or eventually get a death certificate. cheers.

Have you thought of looking on the census records for your great uncle, to determine whether he had any brothers?

Names on war memorials are recorded in alphabetical order........................

Nicholas

Nicholas Report 27 Sep 2010 13:31

yes. He did have brothers called george and harry (Henry?) but i don`t have the 1911 census to follow them all. They would all be in Taunton probably.I did find the death notice of my great uncle in the local paper in the records office so i`ll try that again .Unfortunatley the records office is shut for a while so i`ll just to be patient.
Thanks again

Sorry i`ve taken so long to get back to you. my great uncle who i know died in the war was Ernest William Spiller, aged3 and was living at 13 Lower Queen street, Taunton, Somerset. my great grandmother was mabel aged 11. one of his brothers is Harry Spiller aged 15, also a brother called Bertie aged 5 . the web site called the road "lower Ducan st` but that is wrong. Also on the 1881 census they had a son called George aged 3 when they were living at 19 Princes st`, Taunton Somerset. Hope this makes sense,. parents are George and Jane

There is a Wilfred Henry Spiller in Taunton who was a builder ?

There is a Henry GeorgeSpiller in Birmingham, born Taunton, widower working as a Bricklayer born 1879 . This ties in with the two nieces born Birmingham living with Jane Spiller 1911- maybe they were grandchildren instead ? Not worked this fully through but will come back when I can.

Yes .Thank you,it is him. i know that area well. i`m a little surprised by the London connection. i`m keeping my fingers crossed you might be able to find the older brother George but not to worry if you can`t. I always appreciciate the help i get from this site. it still confirms that i am going to have apply for some kind of of death record as there were probably many George Spillers and it could just be a coincidence.

Nicholas

Nicholas Report 27 Sep 2010 17:26

I do know that the Spillers had many bricklayers and masons in the family and would have had to move around alot for work so don`t let it confuse you too much as the more you look ,the more you will find. the trouble of course is that so many of them were called George, Henry or John!

Nicholas

Nicholas Report 27 Sep 2010 17:41

sorry. got to go . i will check later. i do think you have found the older brother George. i wonder if there is another death record for a George Henry Spiller that might indicate two separate deaths. if not then it`s looking promising
