Hi Gaynor, once you have digested all the info Janey has provided for you...do take her up on the suggestion of putting your family names into the search trees box above.

I have had a quick look and 2 other people on this site have your grandmother in their tree. It may be worth contacting them for further info on your family.

I only tried with your grandmother's name but it's quite possible you have quite a few connections on here.

If you want to contact Gwenth, just click on her name and send your message by pm (private message).

I do hope this helps and that you find the family connections you are looking for. Cx

Okay, well, I hope what I've said has helped.

You have "Maize" James born 1909 in Tredegar in your tree.

Actually, she was

Births Mar 1909
James Violet Maisie Bedwelty 11a 165

so anyone else searching for her as Violet James won't find you.

You also have Evelyn, 1908, Tredegar. She was really:

Births Sep 1907
James Evelyn Udora Bedwellty 11a 114

You see, censuses aren't accurate sources for birthdates, since someone whose birthday was after the date of the census will show (by calculation) as being born a year later than they really were.

Gaynor Report 20 Sep 2010 20:37

Hi Janey,
Yes, Maggie Warn Is my great grandmother.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Sep 2010 20:27

For example -- if that marriage *is* your gr-grparents, these would likely be their children born after 1911 -- I simply searched at FreeBMD for births with surname James and mother Warn:

Births Mar 1918
James Raymond V Warn Bedwellty 11a 205

Births Dec 1919
James Ronald A Warn Bedwellty 11a 263

Births Mar 1922
James Margaret B Warn Bedwellty 11a 226

Births Sep 1925
James Joyce I Warn Bedwellty 11a 199

After about 1925 we don't post birth details here as the person might be living, but 1925 is the last one in that list.

Your grandfather William Horace shows as William Harris in the 1911, presumably.

That's the kind of information that's needed if what you want to do is find living relations -- both for you to search trees and for others to help find their marriages and children's births (and that info would be sent to you by private message because those people would likely be living).

So if you confirm that information ... and confirm that tihs is what you're wanting to do ...

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Sep 2010 20:19

Sorry to disappoint, Gaynor -- nobody replying to you is related, and nobody related is likely ever to see your post, unfortunately.

The best way to find anyone who is a member here and is related to any of your family is to put a family tree with all the known names and birthdates on the site, and search trees here for anyone else who has the same people (the Search Trees button at the top of your screen). Gazillions of people have family trees here; only a tiny fraction of them (or of the population) ever reads these boards.

You're probably reading the James "surname board"? If so -- click Trying to Find on the left, then click "to view the entire trying to find board again, *click here*".

There's a post at the top of the board then that gives a general idea of how things work. Also, just browse a few of the other threads to get a feel. You can find your own threads anytime by clicking "My threads" on the left.

If you search trees and do find someone who seems to share family with ou, you click on their name to send a private the message. If they have a current email address on this system, they'll receive a notice of the message from you.

Meanwhile, if the rest of us members here can help find descendants of your gr-grparents (most of us pay for access to databases like at Ancestry where we can search for births, marriages and deaths), you do need to give more specific info -- like the names you know, e.g. of your mother's uncles/aunts/cousins, and (at least approx) dates of birth.

FreeBMD -- the link I gave above --

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

is free and easy to search, and the marriages of your mother's aunts/uncles and possibly their children might be findable there (FreeBMD is not complete up to the present day yet; most of us here subscribe to Ancestry for things like the Margaret Hannah James death I put above -- and you haven't yet said whether that marriage and death are your gr-grmother.)

Hope that helps!

Gaynor Report 20 Sep 2010 20:08

Hi Janey,
My mother was Dwynwen, her father William Horrace. So if Maggie is your great grandmother we are related. Who are your grand parents? I know very little about them, I dont even know what my grandfather looks like. Please if you have anymore information on them, I would be really greatful. I am hoping to come down to wales next April to find out more.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Sep 2010 19:31

Gaynor, you're just being a little vague! both about what information you have and what you're looking for.

"My great grandfather was William and Great grandmother was Maggie Ann."

So one of their children is your grandparent, your mother's parent.

And their other children's children would be your mother's first cousins.

Is that who you'd like to find?

BarbaraFromYorkshire gave the 1911 info -- if I may condense it for readability:

JAMES, William Head Married M 29 1882 Chaff Cutter Breconshire Cricklowell
JAMES, Maggie Ann Wife Married 4 years F 26 1885 Mon Tredegar
JAMES, Evelyn Eudora Daughter F 3 1908 Mon Tredegar
JAMES, Violet Maize Daughter F 2 1909 Mon Tredegar
JAMES, William Harris Son M 1 1910 Mon Tredegar
JAMES, Evan Brother Single M 23 1888 Grocer's Assistant Breconshire Cricklowell

Is one of those three children your grandparent? Do you know whether they had children after 1911, and who they were?

It might be not too difficult to identify marriages for at least some of their children, and possibly find their children's births. Are you not in touch with any of your mother's cousins?

Have you searched for any of the names you do know in trees here at GR? (Do you have the names in your own tree?)

Is this their marriage?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Sep 1906
DAVIES Sarah Jane Bedwellty 11a 151
HISCOCK Bertram Edward Bedwelty 11a 151
? JAMES William Bedwellty 11a 151
? Warn Margaret Ann Bedwellty 11a 151

Tredegar is in Bedwellty registration district.
(Proper names of people are needed for searching.)

So I suspect this was Maggie Ann's birth -- closest thing I find:

Name: Margaret Hannah Warn
Year of Registration: 1884
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Bedwelty
County: Monmouthshire
Volume: 11a

(that would make her 26 in the 1911 census)
Page: 108a

and thus her death -- and the informant named on her death certificate could be a child, or it could give her address at death:

Name: Margaret Hannah James
Birth Date: 30 Sep 1884
Death Registration Month/Year: 1977
Registration district: Blaenau Gwent
Inferred County: Gwent
Volume: 28
Page: 0056

Or what about writting to the "letters Page" in the local paper asking if anyone can remember William and Maggie Ann, ??
I'm not sure of the "local Paper" but Ann of Green Gables may know what its called.

Hello Gaynor,
Perhaps you can contact the library and ask them if they could look at the Electoral Listing to see who was living at the Bridge End Inn for the years you are interested in.

Hi Barbara, Have found them on 1911 census, but can not find anyone who know's them later, I thought they would have been well known because of the pub. I know they would not be alive, but there grandchildren should be.

Sorry Gaynor,
I hadn't noticed your reply before I posted. So it's not the William James, Innkeeper from the Crime & Punishment website.
