I am trying to work out the maiden name of my greatgreatgrandmother, she is shown in the 1861 census
as the wife of Edward James born c 1827 Enfield Middlesex
she is shown as Ann b c 1833 Cork Ireland

Their eldest daughter Elizabeth is born 1855 3rd qtr Enfield
Middlesex, Edmonton District
so did Edward and Ann marry sometime before Elizabeths birth ?

I was told by a distant family member that her name was Ann Harris who married Edward 1851 Lambeth but am not quite sure about this info as in the 1881 census Ann is shown as Mary Ann
but says she is born Enfield ? 1861 1871 states Cork Ireland

I did find an entry of marriage for an Edward James 1st Qtr 1851
Barnet Middlesex which borders Enfield but dont know who he marries ? if anyone can help me with this I would be most grateful

I can tell you that Edward James father was also called Edward

Buy Elizabeth's birth cert....that will cut out all the speculation

So this is who you are looking for info for?

Age: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1833
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Edward James
Gender: Female
Where born: Countyling Tola, Ireland
Civil parish: Enfield
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Street Address:

Occupation:

Registration district: Edmonton

Household Members: Name Age
Edward James 32
Ann James 28
Elizabeth James 6
James James 4
Edward James 2
Henry Foreeman 25 - lodger

Update: On 1871 Enfield, Middx has been crossed out as place of birth and Ireland inserted. The transcriber must have had such a bad copy that he/she missed it or chose to ignore it.

The marriage in 1851 in Barnet was to a Mary Eagles.

If you buy the daughter's birth certificate it will give you Ann's full name.

Perhaps they married in Ireland?

OK Flick

You were right, I was wrong.

As I said I did not know if she was Ann or Mary Ann

But I notice Mary Eagles shows no middle name ?

Thank you OB

This is the marriage I initially mentioned in my post but as I said
in the 1881 census she gives her name as Mary Ann ?
also why would Edward marry so far from home ?
in the 1851 he is still single living with parents

Ah, but you have "Ann Harris who married Edward 1851 Lambeth but am not quite sure about this info" so I thought you hadn't found it.

Lambeth is only over the River Thames. That is probably where Ann was living at the time.

As for only Ann & not Mary Ann. It's quite common for people not to give their full name. Especially at that time.

Yes you are right Ozi

Lambeths only about 20 miles down the road from Enfield
what I meant was the family were so tightly knit around Enfield
and yes it may well be her, the birth cert will tell me for sure

Thanks again

Re Mary Ann Harris - she's my Father's Great Grandmother. We've been doing our family tree for 5 years now (using Ancestry.com), have just joined Genes and seen the message board for Records. Haven't yet worked out, apart from this way, how to contact you. All the info you have (married in Lambeth, when and where born - either Kerry or Cork - is right. Edward James and Ann Harris had Edward James who married Alice Cowley. They're Dad's grandparents on his mother's side. We're trying to find out what happened to Alice Cowley. I don't suppose you know? Can you tell us how you're related to Edward and Ann James? From your message, looks like Elizabeth, their daughter, is one of your ancestors. She would have been an Aunt of my Grandmother.

Thomas, if you click on Ray's name above his post, you will go to a window which will allow you to send him a pm (private message).

Ray may no longer be visiting GR (Genes Reunited), but GR will send him an email to let him know he has been contacted, as long as his email address hasn't changed in the meantime. This post is only 5 months ago so it's possible his address hasn't changed.
