Find Ancestors

My grandfather Leslie Cross (1900-1955) married Cicely Mayall Bickerdike on 3 October 1925. Her parents were George Henry Bickerdike (1858-1955) and Ethel Mayall (c1882 - ) I could not find a birth certificate for Cicely Bickerdike even though it is known that her birthday was 29 September and it is believed that she was born in 1903 in Rochdale.

I do not have access to the 1911 Census but I have been informed by someone with access that George adopted Ethel's daugher Cicely. But I cannot find a birth certificate for Cicely Mayall.

1. Any Assistance finding Cicely's birth certificate would be appreciated.

2. Any Assistance finding Emily's birth certificate would be appreciated.

3. According to the marriage certificate of George Bickerdike (Butcher) and Ethel Mayall (Spinster) (17/07/1905) they were living in Altrincham. Ethel's father is stated to be Alkina (?) Mayall – Mill Manager. Any information (certificates, census or other information) would be greatly appreciated.

INTERESTINGLY - just a few streets away there is a family called Hulton with a son who is just a couple of years older than Ethel. I wonder if Cicely's middle name gives a clue to her "real" father's name!!! (Thomas Hulton perhaps)

Thanks but I don't think his name is Clarence. I have looked again at the marriage certificate. The Al.. at the start is the same as the Al.. in Altrincham and there is a large K in the middle which is similar to the large K in the middle of Bickerdike.

Could you check the 1911 census and see what it gives as Ciceley's birth place?

The transcription says Lancashire Middlesex (which can't be right) but I was wondering if it said Lancashire Middleton - which would make the birth you found much more likely (as Middleton comes under the Oldham registration district). It would also make the Ethel Mayall I found in the census much more likely.

i just tracked the eldest child william of the family that was found in the 1891 census born 1875 back to 1881 & think its a very good possiblity its right family for your ethel as here they are in the 1881 census minus ethel not born yet the father,s name is Elkanah Mayall
maybe the vicar miss herd what the person said when he was filling out the marriage cert ???? as if you say the name above quick it could sound like alkina

Lancsbmd has that Cicely Mayall birth as Middleton sub reg district.

I've looked again at the 1891 census (where the father is transcribed as Clarence) and the image actually looks more like Elkanah.
