Well all I can say Chris is thank you, you have been great. Robert Desborough is my connection to William. Some of my half brothers and sisters were born in Little and Great Paxton before they decamped to Peterborough, where quite a few of them still live. |

I do not know, Louise Desborough (Circus) did die in 1930 but I have as yet no date. I do not understand the significance of a Will on the Probate Index. I am not a member of Ancestry as I can only afford to be a member of one History site at a time. I am afraid I also get a bit worried at the sites that offer free time, perhaps unwarranted. |

I will just make the point that a child of an unmarried father will not normally be registered with his surname. |

Yes I know, but Elsworth is not that far from St. Ives, Huntingdonshire. I have searched and searched and the only William Desborough born 1853 I can find is the one in St. Ives, I do not want to send for a birth certificate if this is not the right one. How do I find out if I have got the right branch of the Desborough clan? There are many Desboroughs around that area so it is quite difficult. The names Thomas and William appear quite frequently. |

I am not sure that you have the right birth. |

Yes this is him. I have posted a general reply. All the family came from the surrounding district of Caxton. I do not know whether his mother died or was a girl Thomas got into trouble. |

Thank you for all your help. All the Desborough (Desbury) family came from Elsworth, Cambridgeshire. On the 1861 Census William Desbury (really Desborough) is 8 years old. I know it says his father Thomas Aged 30 is unmarried but I am finding it impossible to find out who William's, mother was. As Thomas has spent his life up to 30 years old around the Elsworth area I assume the mother of William is from the surrounding area. I am new to the research field and just do not know where to go from here. I have done reasonably well up to now but am stuck. Any help would be appreciated. |

I presume that you are assuming that Thomas was his father by looking at the 1861 census of the Desboro family living in Long Sutton. Lincolnshire. |

I do not know if anybody can help. I have a birth reference (3b264)for William Desborough born June 1853 in St Ives Cambridgeshire. Can anybody tell me if his father was Thomas and who his mother was? I am completely stuck. |
