I am having trouble finding either a death or even a divoice cert
i have tried really to find her..
Her name is Rosa Bradley nee Cole ,i believe she would have died before 1931 or other wise divoiced before this year as this year the man she was married to married my mother inlaw .
Any help would be very helpful .

Rosa may have changed back to her maiden name as i know you can after a divorce.....

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 6 Sep 2010 10:52

You can apply here for a 10 year search of divorce records:-

Principal Registry of the Family Division
First Avenue House 42-49 High Holborn
LONDON
WC1V 6NP

Telephone 020 7947 6939

However it is quite expensive £30 - £50 per search.

Is it possible that the couple never divorced? Between the wars a lot of marriages broke up and because divorce was very expensive and difficult to get lots of couples just separated and later set up home with a new partner as if they were married. My own father-in-law did this.

the marriage cert to your MIL would be the place to start because his marital status on marriage will show

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 6 Sep 2010 11:51

But the information on the marriage certificate will only be the information given at the time - not necessarily true!!

I think the best thing to do is to look again at your in-law's marriage certificate and see whether Mr. Bradley described himself as "widower", "divorced" or "bachelor".

If he says he is divorced then there should be records (which I think he would have had to provide). If he said he was a widower again I think he would have had to provide his first wife's death certificate. However there were lots of bigamous marriages at that time when married men who could not afford to divorce just said they were bachelors.

Hi
The marriage certificate states he was a widower who knows if he gave them proof .
I shall keep on looking , i am in touch with someone in NZ who maybe able to help , might be greatgrandchild of Rosa.
