Will definitely do that Susan and thanks again. My aunt is out at the moment but I am going to pick her brains on these twins whether they looked alike etc. and what she knows about them. You never ever get to the end of your family tree - there are always so many more questions to answer.

I was hoping that they both died after 1984 and then I could check if they were born on the same day. But it seems trying to find marriages Winifred M m. a Mills in 1940 had one son and then looks as if she died in 1944 age 33. As for Dorothy E a possible wedding to a Wooding in 1949 but as she was 39 yrs old no children and at the moment cannot find a death. So back where I started really.

Hopefully all will be revealed when you receive the certs!!!

The trouble is so do mine have the same volume and page number - maybe this theory is going to be blown out.

Hopefully someone will correct me on this if i am wrong..........but, i have two sets of twins in my tree, born around the same time and each twin has the same Vol and Page number!!

That makes a lot of sense Elaine. I will order both certs and see what I find.

The only thing is if she had Winifred before giving birth to Dorothy she would have registered the two together anyway. They are both registered in the same quarter that is why I thought they were twins.

just an idea.
Would the numbers be after each other when they were registered, i can't see that some one would register one twin then go back later to register another!

Just a pointer.....

It depended on where the registrar came from, not where the person was born....
ie: my grandad was born in Radcliffe Lancashire, comes under Bury registration district.....but he's down as being registered in Heywood a town the other side of Bury....
But he was actally born in the house he lived in till he married, birth & marriage cert confirm this.....
same goes for me... born in one town registered in another...

so maybe thtis is why your having trouble finding it...
or maybe she was visiting and had the baby there....this is such a headache of a hobby.....but a good one....lol

Thanks everyone for all your help. Something that Margaret said about a member of the family taking her - I know all the Smiths and know they didnt but I have just been looking at the Wards. My grandmother had a sister Ellen who married a Thomas Hunt and living in Northampton. It is a coincidence that she had what I put on my tree as twins June 1910 - a Dorothy Hunt and a Winifred Hunt. Never occured to me before.

If I get a copy of this birth cert how will I know if they are twins or not. Unfortunately says she was born in Northampton and they had 6 children to the marriage and 5 still living which are Sidney, Elsie, Gwendoline and what I thought were twins (as there are twins in the family) on the 1911 census.

I think this could be the answer. Well done everyone. and thanks again

She was definitely not given to any family member - the only family was the 5 girls.

I did find a Winifred born in Lymington to I think the name was Munday July 1910 but they definitely had her as being born to that family.

As there were no formal adoption records until 1926/7 she could have been given to a family member.

This was the case in my family, my great aunt had a baby out of wedlock and was taken in by her cousin. I was fortunate to be able to trace what happened to her but some info was common knowledge.

Don't quite know what to suggest if nobody knows what happened to her, if she changed her name if she was given away, no chance

I thought I knew everything about my family until the 1911 census came out.

Grandfather Herbert Smith b 1881 Sway, Hants (Lymington) m Eveline Ward b 1882 from next village Brockenhurst in 1908 Sway. Had 5 girls Lily Eveline (my mother) b Aug. 09, Doris Ellen b June 11, Kitty Ruth b Mar 14, Marjorie E b June 16 and Edna Mary b June 22.

Then the 1911 census came out and we have a Winnie 1 yr old together with my mother - children born alive to present marriage 2, children still living 2 Winnie is put down by my grandfather as daughter.. Cannot find a birth or a death but my grandmother could have got another child in around May 1910. Two aunts are still living and know nothing of Winnie - my gran never mentioned her.

I do wonder whether she was given away as life was very hard in those days but as she was 1 yr old in 1911 she must have been registered somewhere - has anyone any other ideas. I have searched everywhere for birth and death but cannot find her. They never left the village of Sway until the 20s.

As I say it is a real puzzle but would be grateful of any ideas.
