Ozibird Report 5 Sep 2010 21:23

Thanks you guys. I tried googling hame forger with no luck. I realized when it came up on 2 censuses that it must be for real.

Like you Michael*, I know naff all about horses or their accoutrements. You live and learn.

I think you should send them an email to correct them Michael*.

My father and grandfather would have a fit if I didnt know the difference being first class horsemen themselves...
And me being a studious pupil of theirs when young...

But I have made a slight error by typing Hames...It is Hame...no plural even though they come in pairs...

Thanks FBG
I know naff all about horses.
I got the definition from the book of past occupations.

Either way, I guess it helps to know that it's not a typo error of "Home maker" as was suggested.

Michael*I have to say this ,sorry..

Hames are made of metal and are forged.
Collars are made of leather and stuffed with horse hair or linen etc and go over the horses head.

The "hames"sit either side of the collar and have holes in for parts of the harness to be attached to and for the reins to be fed through.

The collars would be made by a harness maker (leather worker)and the hames would not be made by the same person I would not have thought as they are two different skills.(leather and metal work)

Lecture over.

Emily it would be useful to know whether we are on the right track here.

On the subject of that occupation.

Hame forger - is a leather worker specialising in making collars for draught horses

Maureen, I think Emily has confused us all.

So if Hilda 1923 (mmn Huntley) was Ethel's daughter, do we take it that we are looking for the birth of Ethel Huntley not Ethel Hodgetts ?

Births Jun 1893

Huntley Ethel - Walsall 6b 786

Where did you get your info from?

Have you done a "Search Trees"? (top of this page)

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Sep 2010 20:05

If you take Ethels mothers maiden name and try and marry it off to Hodgetts it should give you her parents names.

But her cert would do that for sure if you buy it.

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 3 Sep 2010 20:03

Sorry, the only Hodgetts /Walsall birth I see in that quarter is a Hilda.
