Christine Report 25 Aug 2010 12:56

I am hoping that someone could do a look up on the 1901 census for me please.

I have found my Florence L Nelson and her mother Alice L Nelson in Essex in 1901 and would like to find out the address and who else is in the household if possible. Alice is 44 and Florence is 24. Florence was born in London (Middlesex).

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Back in 2010 a very helpful person found my relatives, Florence (24) and Alice Neilson (Nelson) (44) living in Essex in 1901 with a one year old child, Alma Singh, listed as grandson.

I have since tried to find out more information on Alma but to no avail. I can't find a birth, marriage or death.

Any suggestions as to where I go next?

I looked at the image of the baptism in the Parish Register, and there is something a little strange

In the left margin is a handwritten notation "at hospital"

Address:- N.W. Hospital

no occupation given for father

There are 4 baptisms with the notation "At hospital" in the margin, entered one after the other ................... and out of sequence with other baptisms!

It looks as these 4, and one Private Baptism, were entered into the Register at a later date, as though whoever had done the baptisms "out of the church" had forgotten to enter them..

The sequence is ...................

regular baptism in church ....... Nov 18 1903
baptism at hospital ....... May 16, 1903; June 16 1903; July 4 1903: and Oct 5 1903
Private baptism ...... Nov 8 1903
regular baptism in church ....... Nov 22 1903

Now, Alva's birth was registered as March 1900 ........ but she was not baptised until 1903, in hospital. I wonder if that means she was seriously ill??

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Apr 2012 05:39

Do note however that Alva's birth is registered as NEILSON, not Singh

This indicates that Florence was not married to father Mahalah Singh

and I don't see a re-registration in the name of Singh

I was thinking Phillis M D Neilson on the 1911 Census was also born in 1900

and along the lines of a change of name for Alva

but I don't think so!!!

BUT

a Public Family Tree on ancestry says that Phyllis Maud D Neilson was the daughter of Rowland Neilson and Regina Mary Spurway

Looking for Mah* Singh in 1891, there is just one entry - the lad is about the right age and the right place to be considered the possible father in 1901:
