The Argus, Monday 4 April 1898 HOBBINS.-On the 3rd April, at Alfred Hospital, of typhoid fever, Ellen, the dearly-beloved wife of John Henry Hobbins of South Melbourne and Malvern, aged 30 years.
Interred at Melbourne General Cemetery.
The Argus, Wednesday 22 May 1929 OLD MELBOURNE RESIDENT. Death of Mr. J. H. Hobbins. In a little book at the Titles Office, Queen street, are inscribed the names of all the people who were bom in Melbourne during the first few years of its existence. Among the first few entries are the names of the children of John Pascoe Fawkner, one ot the founders of this city. Then follows immediately the name of John Henry Hobbins, the date being October 24, 1840. Mr. Hobbins died last week, aged 89 years, but few people knevv that he had been born in Melbourne, and fewer still that he was one of the first white children born here after the foundation of the city in 1839 [year hard to read?]. Mr. Hobbins's parents were living at the time of his birth in a small house on the site on where the C???? [Conference?] Hotel now stands, at the corner of Flinders and Queen streets. He was baptised at St. James Chapel on November 4, 1840, by the Rev. A. ? Thompson. Several years of Mr. Hobbins's boyhood were spent at since delicensed Mistletoe Hotel, Mackenzie street, just behind the police headquarters, Russell street. This hotel was kept by Mr. Charles Wright, who was then ? notable by the fact that he drove "?-in-hand" every weekend. Later, Mr. Hobbins joined several gold rushes, meeting with indifferent success. After his marriage he took up land five miles from Murtoa, at the place now know n as C? ...Mr. Hobbins found the occupation of hotel-keeping, the C? Hotel being under his.... he established a ? of express waggons between Murtoa and Warracknabeal, before the ? was extended beyond Murtoa. Leaving the Wimmera district, Mr. Hobbins returned to Melbourne, and established himself a business as a merchant, hotel-keeper and land and estate agent. One of the most interesting epochs in Mr. Hobbins life was his visit to Western Australia after the failure of the Melbourne banks. About that time, "Hannan's Find" at Coolgardie was the cause of a new "rush" and Mr. Hobbins organised a party of six to go to Coolgardie and seek their fortunes on the goldfields. Included in this party were Sir Graham Berry, Mr. McKay (a bank manager), and Mr. Archie Fraser (a nephew of Mr. Hobbins). From Albany, where the party landed, they made thier way to Dundas. Here the party was divided, and Mr. Hobbins and Mr. Fraser made thier way to Coolgardie alone. Water at this time in Coolgardie was exceedingly scarce, and Mr. Hobbins was surprised on arrival to see a man working a condenser, by means of which he condensed fresh water from salt water to supply the needs of the residents. Mr. Hobbins immediately purchased the condensing plant for £20, and he and his nephew worked 20 hours daily ? for the plant and condensing fresh water. Frequently, Mr. Hobbins used to ? a man with a horse and cart would come along and consume 25 worth of water in a few minutes. Having run the condensing business for some time at a handsome profit (estimated at £20 per week), Mr. Hobbins and Mr. Fraser invested £800 in the purchase of horses, waggons, and provisions, and organised a carrying service to the new fields. The first two trips were remarkably successful, but on the next trip Mr. Fraser became ill, leaving Mr. Hobbins by himself. Then several of the horses died from eating a poisonous herb, and a series of misfortunes left Mr. Hobbins with his capital gone. Selling the provisions for what they would fetch, Mr. Hobbins sent Mr. Fraser, who had recovered from his illness, back to Victoria while he returned to the goldfields. Some years later, he came back to Victoria. At the time of his death, he was living with his daughter, Mrs. D. Boyd, in Burwood road, Burwood. It is believed Mr. Hobbins was the oldest surviving native born resident of Melbourne. He was twice married, and leaves three sons and three daughters.

Ah, well that's good to know!
I keep wishing I had more Aussie stuff of my own that I could set you people on to.
The bit I did have, our departed but very dear Lewella did dig up for me a while back -- old Ernest Hill/Monck's brief sojourn there. Now, I do have his brother William Hill whom I can't find after 1861 ... probably succumbed to the family plague, TB, but you never know, he may have preceded Ernest to Australia ... William Hill, such an easy name ... ;)
