Little Lost Report 13 Aug 2010 11:10

I dont thats why I asked if he was on 1871 as he would have had Maria and Charles with him under the name cummins. I was just browsing all the entries for woolwich and noticed a birth for a Maria and shortly after a death for a William.

there is a birth for a Maria Cummins and there is a death for a William Cummins at Woowich aged 42 so I was wondering if Maria was a Cummins but her father William died and her mother remarried to a butler and she said her father was William Butler.......

Carol Ann Report 13 Aug 2010 10:50

So where does William Commins come into this?

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 13 Aug 2010 10:42

maria Butleris on 1911, 1901 1891 as Maria Pearson c1870 Woolwich. She married William PEarson 1890 Northfleet Kent fathers name William Butler, labourer. 1881 has her in the metropolitan district school. School registers have her nearest living relative as a Charles Butler c1867 woolwich also in school. She is mising from 1871 census and cant find a birth for her under that name. There is a Maria Butler born Hampstead but this is not the one as she married GEorge Shurety and is on a later census with her parents.
There is also a baptism for a Maria Butler in 1884 at Sutton near Croydon birthdate 15th January 1870 fathers name William so that could possibly be mine a it is in the area of the school she was in.
I have tried all sorts of ideas but so far nothing has proven correct.

I have found a Maria Butler 1870 aged 4 mths on the 1871 census, she is down as grandaughter to John the head of the house...
somethings not ringing right here though, the census page has her under the name of Elizabeth Butler, widow, D.I.L...
so i had a look on the 1861 census to see if they had a son missing, so we may then know his name...
But on the 1861 census all the children are the same as the 1871....does this make sense so far?
but on closer looking on the 1871.....all his children are down as married but with no partners....so either we have here his family all married brothers and sisters or there is one huge mistake made by the person filling the form....All the girls are down as D.I.L
the only ones not down as married are those too young...
so could this be her.....

LL, are you assuming she was born Woolwich as that was where she was married, or is that what's recorded on the census?

Could she have been married before?

May be her mother didn't re marry and just took the name of Cummins, this happened to me...
My other halfs tree had a William Coote ( was his birth name) but in some census's was down with another surname...on his marriage cert didn't have his birth fathers name, just the one of his adopted father, whom his mother married many years after they had been together, in total they had 3 children together before marrying, so just to prove not everything cut and dried.....my trees been a nightmare, come to think of it still is...
but don't give up hope as at some point the info will come to light as some of mine has...

Births Mar 1870 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Butler Maria Hampstead 1a 621

D you know for sure she was born in Woolwich?

The list below shows the civil registration districts in the City of London from 1st July 1837, and the County London from its formation on 1st April 1889, until its abolition on 1st April 1965 (thereafter see the county of Greater London). The same districts were used to compile the censuses returns for the years 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901

Woolwich is one of these districts

I was just trying out different permutations for my Maria Butler b1870 Woolwich but not registered under that name or in 1871 census. Her father is apparently William so I was just wondering if she was registered under a different name and either her mother or father died and she then had a different name. Just wondering if William Cummins could have been her father but her mother remarried to a Butler...
