Find Ancestors

Trying to trace the birth of William Hayes. On the 1851 he shows his place of birth as the above - give or take a year 1794.

LDS and Hugh Wallis don't offer assistance. Any help would be appreciated. (Wm died prior ro 1861 and spent most of his life in Lancaster).

Of course, he may not have been born there, he may have been brought up there. Happened to one of mine. It was only when I found him in an early census with his parents that I realised!

If you google Whitewell it says it is in Ribble Valley area of Lancashire!!
It is very near Clitheroe.

I looked at Hugh Wallis in Clitheroe which I think was the registration district for Whitewell.

Do you have anymore info on him?

On 1851 census he was a widow and a mariner,have you seen him on 1841 census.

William Hayes says born LANCS age 48 = 1793.
Jane wife 47
Jane 18 married Richard monks in 1847 he died 1848 she is on 1851 census.She also married thomas Baxter 1866.

Ellen 15 married William Stewardson.
Mary 13
Jemima 10 married in 1858 John Stewardson

Next door but one
Thomas Monks 44 shoemaker widow.
Richard Monks 17.

Hello Mary. i know pretty much everything about him after his marrieage in Lancaster. On the 1841 he is there with his wife Jane 47 who died shortly after. Wm died in Lancaster in the fifties. Everything about him is Lancaster except for his birthplace on the 1851.

Not yet got to the bottom of the Monks on the 1851 - perhaps he took up with her after his wife died.
The Monks children were pretty much all born "Hayes". I have established the Hayes Newton connection which gets more interesting as the time gets further on.

Hi Harry,I wouldn't take much heed of place of birth on 1851 census,as everything else points to Lancs.
His children were christened St Mary's Lancaster which now is Priory.

Richard Monks is burried there he died 11/9/1848.

I didn't see any members of the Hayes family there.
Hayes/ Heys/Heyes are the other names given to them.

Hi harry I think i got info off www.lan-opc.org.uk or google St mary's Lancaster and that site comes up.

Also the William Hayes christened in Clitheroe was at St Mary Magdelene Clitheroe.

Several people kindly helped me the other day. Have since found out that although Whitewell is in Yorkshire, the records are kept in Lancashire.(Whalley).
Whalley doesn't seem to contain St Michaels, Whitewell, and I just wonder if anyone has access to those records for William Hayes, born 1794 give or take a year. - going up to Preston is a little beyond me at my very venerable age.

Looking at the available data searching on variations, there seemed to be large gaps in the records around the time you need, found this little snippet.

Whitewell was an extra-parochial part of the parish of Whalley. There are original registers at the Lancashire County Record Office for C, 1713-1994; M, 1719-1991; B, 1719-1993. In addition there are film versions of the BTs for C, 1756-1777 & 1810-1854; M, 1756-1777 & 1810-1848; B, 1756-1777 & 1810-1854. The IGI coverage is approximately that of the BTs and therefore has important omissions in the period 1778-1809.

It includes Whalley and Whitewell but I can't find him there.
