I am trying to find information on Agnes or Mary Weir. Mary born in 1868/9 at Whitburn, West Lothian was my grandmother. She moved to Derbyshire as a servant/laundry maid and married my grandfather in 1903. Her mother, Agnes, came from a large family in the Whitburn area with at least 7 brothers and sisters, her parents names were David and Mary (nee Nicol). Any information would be gratefully received as there seems to be no trace of Agnes after she registered her daughter's birth.

This looks like Mary in 1891 but I can't find her or her mother in 1881.

Do you have Mary's birth certificate please? Did her mother register the birth? Have you looked for a marriage for Agnes after Mary's birth please?

Yes, this looks like my grandmother's Mary's family, Agnes registered Mary's birth herself d.o.b. 13 December 1868, there is no father's name and the word illigitimate is stated. Mary next appears with her grandparents on the 1871 census as Mary Thomson, granddaughter aged 2 but there is no mention of her mother Agnes. I don't have Mary's birth certificate only the birth registry notice, I will try looking for a marriage notice for Agnes now but Mary obviously stayed with her grandparents. Well done Aileen! No wonder I couldn't find Agnes on the census when searching with just her christian name, year and place of birth - she suddenly got 4 years younger!

I wonder if there was an RCE on Mary's birth entry regarding paternity as it looks like her father must have been a Thomson.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can't believe you have been able to find out so much. I'm new to record searching and have spent a lot of money on the Scotlands People website and daren't spend any more yet. Where did you manage to find all of this information? Mary was my grandmother but she died in 1930 and my father died in 1955 so her side of the family was completely unknown to me. I feel as if I'm getting to know them now, I'd like to think that there are some relations still out there.

most of the information is from Scotland'sPeople but I have been doing research for many years and know the most economical ways to search. The census info is from Ancestry.co.uk again experience and knowledge of Scotland count as many records are very poorly transcribed
