Exmouth is beautiful - I was born there in my grandmothers house.

Ahhh-I see -Exmouth is nice though-nice Mr Hitler!!!

Jenny

Jenny Report 14 Jul 2010 22:08

Family moved to Exmouth after Mr Hitler kindly sent his bombers to drop a rather large one onto their little house in London. My mum was about 11 when she moved to Exmouth - met and married my dad and has lived in Exeter ever since. She is now 79.

Thankyou to everyone for help and advice. It's always possible that granddad did marry in Canada. I know he spent some time in Canada - possibly after WW1 (he was in the trenches during the war) and before meeting my gran in the mid 1920's. Is there anyway of checking the Canadian marriage records just in case ?
Thanks again

Uncle could still be registered as BAYNE, even if they hadn't married.

I can't see another marriage for Harry though.
Could he have married overseas perhaps....?

Registering a child under the father's surname is no proof that a marriage had taken place.

Familyfinder

Familyfinder Report 14 Jul 2010 21:19

you may be right-she must have married young if so-but can't see another likely-very strange!-or maybe he was married before?

Jenny

Jenny Report 14 Jul 2010 20:52

The birth record is correct - Mary Martha Fanny Fowler was definitely born in 1897. She was my grandmother but I've been unable to find any record of her marriage to my grandfather - he was called Harry Rees Wilson BAYNE. My mum thinks its likely that Mary had married someone else before she met grandad - and in those days divorce was expensive so they lived together. I'm certain any marriage she may have entered would have been prior to 1927 as my uncle was born in that year and was registered as BAYNE.
I think its unlikely to be the IVORY surname as its fairly close to the time my uncle would have been conceived

A likely child of the above marriage-but you'd need earlier info on Mary to tie things up-best order marriage cert?
