Great excitment!
1881 Census
Benjamin Bayfield MILES
Head M Male 51 Pulham, Norfolk, England Grocer & Draper
Susannah MILES
Wife M Female 41 Wortley Leeds, York, England
John B. MILES
Son U Male 24 Doncaster, York, England Railway Stoker
Walter B. MILES
Son Male 16 Wortley Leeds, York, England Grocers Assistant
Florence Martha MILES
Daur Female 4 Wortley Leeds, York, England Scholar
Jessie Lake B. MILES
Son Female 2 Wortley Leeds, York, England
Dwelling: 6 Tong Road, Wortley In Bramley, Leeds,Yorkshire

The Search Record Pilot for Pulham, Norfolk has no Benjamin Miles in either parish around 1828 so I looked at the single line census for other years

1861 Census
Miles Benjamin 1828 Fincham Hunslet, Wortley

gives an entirely different birth place but a Search Records Pilot for Fincham has an entry which transcribed by me becomes

BENJAMIN BAIFIELD MILES
Christening: 05 AUG 1827 Fincham, Norfolk
Mother: JANE MILES

The baptism records do not go back before 1813 so no sign of Jane.
Please can anybody see if Benjamin shows up in 1841 in either Fincham or Pulham, or anywhere else?
I couldn't see him in the single line census for either '41 or '51

Many thanks,
Frances

Further delving for Benjamin has produced

Deaths Jun 1911
Miles Benjamin B 84 Bramley
9b 157

1911 Census
Miles Benjamin B 1827 Berham Norfolk Bramley

but I cannot see any Derham on my maps. The 1911 is either not playing ball or there is not anybody else living with Benjamin at the time of the census

Hi Chris, If this is the same Benjamin, and there surely can't be too many with a second name Bayfield, where are they in 1901? He isn't showing up for me so can't decide which is his 2nd wife.....

Frances Report 13 Jul 2010 11:58

Thanks SomersetGirl, the plot thickens! Are there two Benjamin B Miles from Norfolk born in 1827 because the marriage I have for mine is

Marriages Mar 1863
MILES Benjamin Kirkstall
9b 290

SMITH Susan Kirkstall
9b 290

and that does not make 62 years??

Just to add, looks like nephew Charles T Clapham, is next door on 1861 census, down as nephew again!.

Thank you SomersetGirl and Chris. I think the 1861 family is correct as Benjamin has a son John born 1857 Doncaster with him in 1881. Oh flipping whatsit, there is a lot more to unravel here....
Is he a bigamist or does the Doncaster wife die or change her name?

Frances

Frances Report 13 Jul 2010 13:04

SomersetGirl I also have seen that IGI Submitted record and 'Family' includes some of the children shown in the 1881! I have not found a marriage in FreeBMD in Doncaster and wondered whether somebody was trying to legitamise John B 1857?

Sorry for my intermittent presence but I am trying to 'multitask' or, like my old computer, work on 'interrupts'

Chris you have stumbled on the family I unravelled a couple of years ago! In the 1881 for Fanny Skilbeck she has her granson listed as Walter B Miles with her. Skilbeck is her second marriage, the first being Smith.
I have just found

Marriages Dec 1855
MILES Benjamin Halifax
9a 495

SMITH Hannah Halifax
9a 495

but I also have

Marriages Mar 1863
MILES Benjamin Kirkstall
9b 290

SMITH Susan Kirkstall
9b 290

There is also
Deaths Dec 1861
Miles Hannah Doncaster
9c 284

Are they just coincidence?

You have all been so busy whilst I've been away.
For the record this is my Susannah Smith family :-

Father: JESSEY SMITH
Mother: FANNY

Births Dec 1837
SMITH Susannah Leeds
23 370

Births Dec 1840
Smith Jesse Leeds
23 430

JESSE SMITH Marriage: 30 MAY 1830 Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire
Spouse: FANNY SMITH

1851 census
Jesse Smith 47 Ossett

Frances

Frances Report 13 Jul 2010 17:15

Hi Chris and Mary. Thank you for all your posts. I have read through them again and I believe that everything has some connection with Benjamin Bayfield Miles.
His son John B being with his grandma Sarah Smith in1861 and Walter B being with his grandma Fanny Smith (as was) in 1881 means that Benjamins wives both being Smith is just coincidence and they were not sisters !

All I need now is to find out if Benjamin's Bayfield was his possibly his fathers name........?

Mary

Mary Report 13 Jul 2010 19:09

1841 Jesse Smith with wife FRANCIS.

Francis Smith married A/M/J 1856 Leeds 9b 379 to George SKILBECK.
