Do you have any idea of where he was born?

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 13 Jul 2010 20:49

I do not have access to the 1911 census and have not found a Joseph Moughan in the 1901 census.
My late father in law, son of the said Joseph Moughan spoke of his grandmother as being Irish therefor it is possible Joseph was born in Ireland.

Joy Report 13 Jul 2010 21:42

Ah.
In that case, both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census are both free and the site contains a wealth of interesting information here:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

Census of Ireland 1901/1911
The household returns and ancillary records for the censuses of Ireland of 1901 and 1911, which are in the custody of the National Archives of Ireland, represent an extremely valuable part of the Irish national heritage. Read more about their digitisation.
All thirty-two counties for 1901 and 1911, searchable by all information categories, are now available on this site. Corrections and improvements will be ongoing, and we are very grateful to all users who have submitted corrections to us. A small amount of material is missing from the site, and will be placed online as soon as possible.
See Future Plans for information about the next releases of material.

Happy hunting :-)

Hello Malcolm

Nice to find someone else researching the Moughan name!

Mine have been variously mistranscribed as Maughan, Mougham, Manghan, Monghan etc.

I'm thinking this is your father in law:

Births Dec 1914 (>99%)
Moughan Joseph Midwood Selby 9c 1964

If you can confirm that ??????......................then these appear to be his parents:

Marriages Dec 1913 (>99%)

Midwood Mary A Moughan Selby 9c 1875
Moughan Joseph Midwood Selby 9c 1875

Which could well mean that Joseph is around in the England 1911 census & finding him might help to pin down
his place of birth as already said. You can do free searches on the 1911 & then some kind person with a sub (which I don't have) might look at the transcript for you.

Any other snippet of info you have would help -any idea of siblings or parents names?

Got to go now but will look in tomorrow & see if I can help anymore.

Thanks but I do not believe this is whom i am looking for.

Joy

Joy Report 15 Jul 2010 22:31

Did you search the free Irish sites that I gave?

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 16 Jul 2010 23:03

I have tried searching the irish sites you gave.
Only Joseph Moughan I have come across was born around1897 there for would appear to be 6 years younger
than the Joseph Moughan I am looking for.

Joy

Joy Report 16 Jul 2010 23:17

Sometimes six years is close enough. With death registrations, the information given is only as accurate as the knowledge of the informant.

Thank you I will Try and find other links.

Sorry I didn't come back before now - been offline for a while. Malcolm I did see your post confirming the details I posted (presume you deleted your post as it was personal information).

The best thing you could possibly do now is to get the marriage certificate of Joseph Moughan and Mary Midwood. This will give you their ages & place of birth & Joseph's occupation plus their father's names & occupations. All that info will help to find Joseph in the Census' and hopefully then his birth record.
