Ref: Grace's age on the 1911.
Perhaps she fibbed. It's not totally unheard of. It may have started when she met and married John Quigley, as we haven't seen the marraige cert we don't know, but he was younger than her, so plenty of women would have fibbed.....why not? And then, she just carried on the fib to her employers.
It's not like people had to produce I.D. right, left and centre in those days, they didn't have a driving licence, credit cards, passport to carry around with them!

I posted a death for Grace Quigley in London,could that not be her?

I think either the age on 1911 for grace is wrong or she was a different Grace lancaster who married John Quigley.

If she was born 1859 like 1911 says,she would have only 12/13 when she married william Lancaster 1871.

The tree on Ancestry has grace born 1850 died 1893!!

Although normally 1911 is accurate but with her being a servant the head of house may have written it wrong.

Why do you say Grace returned to Yorkshire?

Edit ,put John Quigley 1861 in search.
There is someone on here with John Quigley born Glasgow 1861.
She also has George Colley 1815 Whitley yorks dad of Grace/Jane

Looks like Grace was widowed again, and went home to Yorkshire.
I think the children went to school in Paris, France.

I havent had chance to look yet, my kids are home from school, fighting for the pc for facebook lol.

can only search on freebmd as i only have a standard membership.

I always assumed Grace died in London somewhere.

This is opening up lots of other avenues.

As for the story about the finishing school. Do you know where this school might have been?

As William died in 1896, that puts his daughters Jane and Mary at ages 24 and 20, so perhaps not likely they were taken to finishing school as they're likely to have been a) already working and/or b) married.
We know Thomas married Ruth Carter in Fulham, so that leaves us with 2 children (we know of from the census info given to you earlier) who could have been taken & put into school - Maybell/Mabel and Edith.
Have you looked for their marriages/deaths?

one way to search for children born to a marriage is to go to freebmd.org.uk, search for births by putting in the surname, and also maiden name of mother.
Mother's maiden names were included after 1911.

Grace Quigley died 1932 in Kensington 1a 162 age 81 = born 1851.

Can't find her in 1911 though.

1871 Grace not at home but with George and Elizabeth there is grandson Master Whitaker,note Thomas William Lancaster 1879 and Mabel 1886 with Aunt Annie (Colley)and Uncle John WHITAKER.

William Lancaster died 1896 according to tree on Ancestry.

Parents of William were Ralph Lancaster 1813 Ripon -1888 and Mary Ann Baines 1815-1905 her mum was Ann Baines 1794

Ralphs mum was Jane Lancaster 1790

thanks unforunately had my 14 day free trial with ancestory ages ago!

did look on freebmd for Williams death didnt see the one in Kensington presumed William died at Fulham, only saw a couple of young William Lancaster children who died in Fulham in infancy, dont know whether these were connected to William.

You can look up births, marriages and deaths (at least up til around 1935ish in many areas) on Free bmd. As it says - it is free!!!!

You will need the references they give you if you want to send for any certificates. Best place for certs is on-line at GRO (general register office)

There are notes on there which will tell you how to use the search facility and which areas are yet to be transcribed etc etc.

Also, if you register with Ancestry.co.uk you will find SOME info for free, plus a census, but if you subscribe then obviously you'd get tons more info. or you could take advantage of their 14 day free trial.

Thanks for your replys, looks like William sadly died sometime between 1891 and 1901 then.
Grace/Jane remarried did she stay in London or go back to Yorkshire area.?
And what happened to the other children is this when they were sent to finishing school in Europe,
But it must of been a wealthy relative as Grace is a cook and her new husband is a painter,
Curious to know when they went etc
Thomas did marry Ruth Carter, dont know what happened to his siblings or how many there were
Is there any mention of them in 1901 living with there mother and stepfather.
