Although it doesn't help it is worth remembering that it appears to have been quite common for someone getting married to "Inflate" their fathers occupation so that it sounded a bit more "Respectable".

Perhaps a commercial traveller sounded a bit more acceptable than a chainmaker or even a public house keeper.

What a terrible name for you to be researching - I have Lewises in Wolverhampton so I know what it's like. Thank goodness she married Mr. Waltho!
It's a bit much to encourage someone to get a birth cert .,especially when it's not 100% certain, but you might need to if you want to find out more.

Wednesbury is one of those areas which because of the proximity of several registration districts sometimes make it difficult to pin down someones birth registration. I have in the past found the birth registration of people who claimed Wednesbury as their birthplace being registered in West Bromwich, Walsall and Bilston (Wolverhampton).

I wonder whether this might be your Sarah's birth registration:

Births Sep 1840 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor Sarah Helen W. Bromwich 18 525

EDIT: Snap Jan (lol)

This might be her birth -West Brom. covered Wednesbury back then, and Helen/Ellen were interchangeable.

Births Sep 1840 (>99%)
Taylor Sarah Helen W. Bromwich 18 525

Might help if all else fails!

Who are the witnesses on the marriage cert?
