Yes Flick I’m starting to think that way, it’s a shame that there’s nobody around today to ask, My mother and cousin Jean where young children at the time of her death and they don’t know anything.

As there was no penalty until 1875 for not registering births, you may have to accept that her birth wasn't registered.

Thank you Patricia
The Census returns you gave are the right family.
On her death certificate for 24 December 1939 Newbottle, Co Durham, the age is given as 76 (est, b, 1863) the informant her son-in-law James Lonsdale, the only birth year matches are her marriage date and the 1991 census, and that is possibly because Robert Elliott met her 1891 age given as 24, and she couldn’t say any other age a year later when they married.
The 1911 census given age is way out, but the rest of the family ages are within correct parameters, which includes my grand father Robert, the family moved form Sacriston to Houghton after the death of her husband Robert had died (due to accident) the same year that my grandfather was born.
She’s a real mystery.

No clues there one was Robert Elliott's sister Elizabeth and the other a Policeman from Esh called Thomas Chambers.

Do the names of the witnesses offer any clues?

Seeking information on my great grandmother, “Mary Jane Carr” who married Robert Elliott in Esh (County Durham) 1892, when her age was recorded as 25. Her occupation was “household servant”, and her father’s “Thomas Carr” as miner.

I am unable to pinpoint her birth year due to different ages recorded in the census returns, although in 1891 she was 24 (which matched her marriage certificate). At this time her birthplace was Spennymoor (County Durham), and in 1881 a Mary J Carr was also recorded as a “servant” born in Spennymoor, but claiming to be 18.

The date range for her birth is therefore 1863 to 1867, but I have already bought 3 of the likeliest certificates in order to find her mother’s name, without success.
