Thanks to everyone who are so kindly (and patiently!) helping me in my search for my somewhat elusive Great Grandfather. I am still awaiting both what I hope to be his birth certificate from the GRO (it's not a 100% they will have it) and the marriage certificate from his second wedding. His first which I have, as noted previously, leaves his father's name blank. As soon as I get any more info I'll post details.

Thanks to all again. Much appreciated

The records (if they exist) would definitely be this side of the Atlantic. Dublin doesn't even send records to England.

Who was William's dad from his m.cert?

Description: Henry Walter SEYMOUR of St. John's married Mary Anne ALLWARD in the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's on 07 Sep 1854. They had four children, Thomas James (1877), May (1878), Charles (1880), and Frank (20 Aug 1882). Mary Anne was the daughter of John ALLWARD (born in Devon, England) married Anne PILLEY in the Anglican Cathedral in St. John's on 12 Oct 1822. I am interested in tracing ancestors of any of these families.

It seems there's a bit of a gap 1854-1877, so maybe there's some unrecorded stuff in there.

This is Mike's thread also on William Arthur Seymour......... don't worry it's not asking the same question but there is background info on there that may help with a birth search kindly offered by Eringobragh1916.

Mike...Was his first marriage in St John...? Did he have any bros.sisters born there that you know of..??

Mike

Mike Report 15 Jul 2010 15:06

Unfortunately I don't have the names of either of his parents; it remains one of those 'brick walls' I have yet to knock down. I have his marriage certificate to his 1st wife but the name of his father has been left blank.

It was only in the last couple of weeks I discovered he was married twice so I have sent for the marriage certificate for his second wedding. Hopefully information on that will be more useful.

Sorry Ginny, I thought this was simply another route to explore missing ancestors. You say you found a birth record in the UK. Which one is this as I am now confident his birthplace was Newfoundland as the military records you e-mailed indicate.

Mike

You need to stick to one thread about this or the info that we've found will get duplicated

I cant find a thing only a birth in the UK

Mike

Mike Report 11 Jul 2010 11:15

I am struggling to trace a birth record for my Great Grandfather, William Arthur Seymour (b. around 1864/5) sometimes known simply as Arthur Seymour. According to UK Census records he was born in Newfoundland (I have since learned this was in St. John's, Newfoundland) Because Newfoundland was not incorporated into Canada until 1949 it remained a British colony. The question remains therefore, would there still be some birth record of him on this side of the Atlantic or the other?

Any help would be truly appreciated
