I am trying to find which church in Leeds the baptism of Charles Bowman may have taken place. I think he was probably illegitimate. I cannot find him on the 1861 census and I think this could be because he was on the part of the 1861 census in Leeds that is missing. As I don't know the Leeds area which has the missing 1861 census I don't know which church would be the nearest. His birth is not registered on freebmd so I am hoping he was baptised. Any suggestions as to the name of the nearest church is much appreciated. Hope the above makes sense.
Thanks
Marian

Marian Report 8 Jul 2010 15:07

Sorry, I don't know. Near the part of Leeds which has the missing census, which I think might be the west side. Is my request unrealistic?
Thanks - Marian

Which census have you found him on?

jax

jax Report 8 Jul 2010 15:12

To me it is unrealistic not that I have ever been to Leeds as its a city

Don't suppose this could be him? It's not Leeds.

This Charles Bowman and Fanny are still in Darlington in 1911, aged 80 and 77. Charles died there in 1922, aged 93, Fanny died there in 1918, aged 85. Charles was born in York according to the 1911 Census, and Fanny in Evington (Elvington?), Yorkshire, but they had only been married for 30 years in 1911, so it was quite clearly Charles' second or later marriage (as he had a son, Arthur, 35 in 1911). Your Charles cannot have been the groom in the marriage in 1880 in Darlington.

I see that Charles Bowmont died Jan-Mar 1886, Hartlepool 10a 85, aged 34. Charles Bowmont is found in 1881 at 27 Stainton Street, Stranton (West Hartlepool), a railway guard aged 28 with wife Annie, son Horatio and daughter Clara. Charles Armitage Bowmont married Annie Race Apr-Jun 1876, Hartlepool 10a 177.

Now I agree that Charles Bowmont or Bowman cannot be found in 1861. However there is a Charles Armitage, aged 10, in Leeds, listed as the son of John Armitage. In the same family is John's son-in-law, Mark Beaumont, his wife, Hannah, and their children. Mark Beaumont married Hannah Armitage Jul-Sep 1858, Leeds 9b 366. This Charles Armitage was born in Wortley, Leeds. His birth is Apr-Jun 1850, Hunslet 23 384, and he is found in the 1851 Census aged 10 months. He cannot be be the son of Hannah Armitage, since she was born in 1839. Also the Charles you are looking for is most unlikely to be Mark's younger brother. Mark came from Bowling in Bradford, and is found in Bradford in 1851 with his elder brother and younger sister as nephews and niece, suggesting that their parents were dead. There is no Charles Bowmont or Beaumont from Leeds or any nearby Registration District between 1850 and 1853. In the absence of other information I think it is quite possible that he is Charles Armitage, who took his brother-in-law's name. What was Charles' father's name on the marriage certificate?

I first raised this query quite early in July and have only noticed that my replies went over on to a second page which I have only just read (believe it or not). Thank you all for replying (sorry its late) and thank you Stan, that is worth investigating.
Best wishes.
