I agree with both Dea + Jonesey - bread and butter pudding [yum yum] other 'old fashioned puddings [yum yum] - sorry but you cannot beat the old puddings!!! and sooooo cheap and easy to make!!!

And - yes - before you say it - I stayed for school dinners and loved them! - best bit of school actually!!!!

Except - about 15 years ago I had someone come arounf to quote for new double glazed windows!

They started off on about £16,000 - they stayed 'forever' but came dowm to about £10,000 - We said 'no' as we NEVER buy from people calling at the door (like you!)

However, the phone rang just then and my husband went to answer it and by the time he came back I had got him down to around £6,000 - I said we should agree!- So we did!

A couple of days later we had a phone call from the Company saying that the Salesman had 'made a mistake' and had 'misquoted the price' - then another one a few days later (from his 'Manager' again, saying that he had not included the French Doors etc!!!

I told them to 'forget it' as I had a signed contract which included EVERYTHING for that price.

Succcess !! - they backed down and installed the lot!

Have you tried Google for old school meals Dea?

Its that time of year I suppose. I am cautious about doorstep callers and as a matter of principle I do not buy anything, product or service from anyone who is a cold caller. If they point out a defect about my house such as blocked guttering or similar I thank them for pointing it out to me and say that I will have to get "The landlord" to get it fixed.

There appear to be a lot of bogus callers about and distraction burglaries are quite common as my local neighbourhood watch newsletter continually mentions so better safe than sorry.

Is this 'National clean up your block-paved drive week !!! ???

I have had 3 people rounf today + 2 telephone calls + another leaflet through my door - ALL offering to clean my drive !!!

Ranged from £60 to £140 !

I have to say, I would have probablhy let the £60 one have a go at it if he hadn't 'talked for 'Oirland' at about 100 miles per 'oyrr' - Nothing personal and not at all racist but he REALLY annoyed me from the very beginning by ringing my doorbell 2 or 3 times and knocking on my door constantly, all within about 10 seconds!

By the time I walked to the door I was quite furious at the intrusion!

The name 'birdseed pie' was just what we called it when it was served at school dinners! - Very few people liked it so there was always LOTS for me.

It didn't have bran or cereals etc and was more solid that the one in the picture.

It was more like a plain shortcake which had bits of seed-like things in it and tiny moist fruit-like bits (maybe tiny chopped dates or something similar). This made it just like a 'chewy shortcake' ??

I suppose I am doomed never to discover what it was but I can still taste it when I think about it!

I quite agree Jonesey, although I don't actually like bread and butter pudding but the other 'old fashioned stick to your ribs ones' I do !! ;-)

I really wish I could find out what that 'birdseed pie' was that we used to have at school. - It was sort of like a shortcake but softer and chewier and it had some sort of 'seed thingies' in it and possibly very finely chopped dates or something similar? It was lovely with lots of custart on top or just as it was.

Any ideas anyone?

It must be something from 'up north' I think as I was in Lancashire at the time and have never seen it anywhere since.

I had something to eat last night that I had not had for many a year, Bread and Butter pudding, it was delicious. It brought back memories. When I was a child my grandmother used to make it for me regularly, I can picture it now as she first prepared it and when she finally removed it from her oven in its enamel dish.

Today's "Designer" desserts are ok but give me the old fashion favourites such as Bread and Butter pudding, Spotted Dick or Jam Rolypoly any day of the week.

Good grief Dea.........how can you manage all that so early in the morning :-S
