I see our Jonesey has had his head in the dictionary again...and is of course, right, again ;-)

My neighbour seems to have taken a liking to going to his car first thing in a morning, clad only in his PJs and carpet crackers......two mornings running now!

Mornin Sylv.

Hi Margee,

Welcome to the thread. To paraphrase an oft seen adage, "You don't have to be mad to post here but it helps".

Whether or not this thread has achieved it aim in reducing the number of duplicated posts is of course unprovable. Personally I think to a certain extent it has. Being an avid reader and contributor to the message boards I certainly see fewer such duplicated help requests than I did before the creation of this thread. The fact that its core message contained in the threads title is rarely off the first page of the "Find ancestors" board can only have helped to reinforce what is in effect a GR rule. The fact that its opening page has up to now been opened and viewed by over 10,700 individual GR members has probably ensured that some of them at least along with countless others have been persuaded not to post duplicate requests.

Obviously it will never completely eliminate duplications but even if it eliminates some then it is serving the purpose its original poster intended.

As others have said the thread has served other purposes as well. It has brought together members from around the globe who perhaps may not have encountered one another on the boards. In some cases those encounters have led to close personal friendships. It has provided a place for its followers to exchange all kinds of information about a variety of subjects. It has offered comfort to those experiencing personal tragedies. Although some of the posts may indeed be considered silly or downright daft for that matter, humour has its place here as well. If its inclusion brings a smile to the face of someone who is down then long may the silliness continue.

Hope to see you making more posts on this thread, the more posters the merrier.

Hello Margee - good to see you. Silly thread? Silly thread? That's a very polite way of putting it. Personally, I would use the word Bonkers! :-D

Gins is right though (did I say that?). This thread does seem to have helped some members through difficult times as well as trying to be helpful.

How are your cooking skills? You could give our Sylvs a hand when her bad back is playing up!

Hi Lainie......where'd you go?

Tis my turn to go now.........night night all........Sleep tight.

I agree Ginns - It is not a 'silly' thread, BUT, to be fair, we can get VERY 'silly' at times :-D :-D :-D

It was nice to hear from a new contributor....but it’s not a 'silly' thread

..........it gets people through lots of hard times, as well as making a point......but we can’t change the world, I know that!

There's been a lot of irrational RR'ing on General Chat the last few days. This has led to lots of protests by affected people, on this site and on FB.

This was posted on a thread by MildredHonkinsin earlier today ........ not sure if you have seen it, so c&p'ing it.

-------------
Hi everyone,

I would just like to assure you all that we are taking this matter very seriously. As you know, we were experiencing unwarranted RR's only a week ago and once we had identified the member responsible, banned them from the site. However, it is possible that they have re-registered. We are looking into ways that we can stop this from happening.

Only allowing paid members to RR is an option that we are considering.

As soon as a post is RR'd, it is removed from the boards. This logic was implemented on the advice of our members as some abusive posts or posts with personal details in were not being removed quickly enough.

Obviously, because of the behaviour of possibly one or a small handful of members, we will now have to rethink this logic.

I apologise profusely for any distress or inconvenience this has caused to those being RR'd. Please can I ask for your patience whilst we identify and implement the best solution to stop this happening in the future. It is very upsetting for those being targeted, but please rest assured that we will be taking action against those responsible.

Thanks

Katie

FINALLY!

That's the idea Margee,

The initial and main intention was to get an important message across and to keep it at the top of the board but you are right, the problem strill exists.

Hoewever, in trying to achieve this, we have built up quite a friendly little community here and we do tend to give support to each other when needed. - whether on genealogy matters or personal things.

We are a mad lot but don't bite :-D

Everyone is welcome!

You're not wrong, Dea. I haven't participated before. I swore I'd never be a part of this silly thread. It's not really doing the job that it was intended for, is it? I think there are just as many duplicate rquests for the same family as there were before. But then I thought "What the heck, if you can't beat them, join them!"

Dea

Dea Report 19 Mar 2012 20:16

I don't remember seeing you on here before Margee !! - Correct me if I am wrong :-D

However, you are VERY welcome!

Glad you got the good weather today - I could do with some of that!

Today, for a change, you're in the wrong part of Canada, Sylvia. Here in Eastern Ontario it's 24 degrees, brilliant sunshine all day. Shorts & T-shirt weather. Yet 1 week and 2 days ago we were snowed in, couldn't get out of our driveway. Only in Canada!
