I was an ink monitor .... filling up the ink wells in our desks --- at my school -- only boys were allowed to be milk monitors ---coz the crates were heavy

and I was class monitor ... cleaning the blackboards and taking messages for Miss

I was always the top of the star chart ...............and I also on a special board for times tables ...........

I knew my 12 x when others did not know their 2 and 3x

It finalised the debate for me - on "nature or nurture" ...

when I became an Accountant ..............................

Hello Ivy ~~~~~~~~~~ welcome to the mad house.

I don't think I ever rose to the giddy heights of being a milk monitor Jonesey; we are obviously in exalted company....... :-D

I was a milk monitor for a short while but exposure of my black market trade in the commodity meant that I was soon relieved of my duties. ;-)

Morning alll~~~~~~~~

Sun is shining, rain has stopped and I now know that golf is good for the old bones!

We used to get milk at school but I dont think kids have that these days. Dea, if you put some meat on those bones of yours it might help, just carrying it around with you all day is exercise ;-)

Hello Ivy,

Many thanks for taking the time to pop in and leave me this interesting information.

I will be spending a lot of time 'googling' over the next few days while I sort out the 'good' exercises from the 'bad'.

Unfortunately, being 'allergic' to exercise myself, it will take me a while to find some that I actually like ;-) :-D BUT, I will sort it :-)

Many thanks again,

Dea x

Hi Dea,

"Weight bearing exercise"

I think the reason this phrase is used is because scientists doing detailed monitoring of astronauts found that long trips in space in weightlessness meant that their bone density decreased.

I roughly translate osteoporosis as meaning pores or holes in the bones - I bet that is not correct, but it gives an image I find helpful. Apparently the calcium ions diffuse out of the bones.

You need to find some way of persuading the bones to recapture the calcium.

There is a lot of calcium in milk (osteoporosis has been linked to women growing up in thirties Britain without regular access to milk) and also in green leafy vegetables - but just making the calcium available is only half the battle.

I was visiting a drug firm in the early nineties who were in the process of developing a drug to help "fix" the calcium and halt the osteoporosis; but trials had shown that just playing golf was more effective than taking the drug.

The scientists believed the reason that golf playing was effective was that walking (unlike swimming) requires the skeleton to bear the weight of the body during exercise.

This is all just anecdotal, so would need checking out, but I hope that it fits with your other reading and helps to visualise what you need to do?

Good morning all,

The sun is actually shining at the moment :-D

I will have the cheese and onion tarts please with extra bacon on top and home-fried potatoes with garlic and bacon for breakfast please.

Thank you Sylvia <3

Got to go and get grand-daughter soon so I need lots of energy ;-)

Thank you for that web link Linds it is very useful - I will study it further when grand-daughter has gone home.

It would seem that I will not be exercising to strengthen my bones but to strengthen the muscles around them to give them support! - That makes a lot more sense - I DO wish people would say exactly what they mean in the first place and then I wouldn't get confused ;-)

See you all later,

Dea Xxx

Some people are born to greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them. Some have a dog named after them.

Dea,
i think the idea is to improve your muscle strength which in turn helps protect your bones have a look at this site
