My grandfather only bathed on Sunday nights.. and I well remember when I was about 11, we were all out late Sunday night so his bath got missed.. I went on and on about it for the next two afternoons after school.. In the finish he had a bath on Wednesday night and I told him that didn't mean he could miss the following Sunday.
He was a creature of habit... his room was next to mine and every night when he was getting ready for bed he would whistle.. one tune was "Old soldiers Never Die" and the other was "Onward Christian Soldiers". that was his repertoire..

yeah, I've seen previous double entries which have been a sort of adjustment of the estate.
In this case, father was still alive. There was no estrangement
the only thing we could think of was ................ if the mother had put her money into some sort of trust fund that paid out on her son's 21st birthday, which was about 6 weeks prior to this probate. Would that have meant that the son had to file for probate??????
I know we could probably solve it by buying the wills ............ but OH doesn't seem too keen.
Thanks

Morning Sylvia,
I do not know but I suspect that "Grant D.R." is just an abbreviation for "Grant of Representation". It might have a Latin base as do many legal terms.
I have seen more than one entry for the same persons estate in the Probate Calendar previously. Mostly the second entry shows a variation in the value of the estate. Maybe additional assets were discovered and in order to release them a second grant of probate was required.
In your particular instance as to why the first grant was made to the husband and the second to the son. It might be due to the fact that as a minor in 1931 the son, who may have been named as his mother's executor, would probably have been legally unable to be granted probate due to his age.

Good morning Sylvia and Persie (stranger) <3
Please leave some of those lovely potatoes for me Persie, I need them to go with my bacon & cheese quiche, mushrooms and bacon :-D
Are you still on that diet ? - How is it going?
Sylvia - can't the world be a cruel and stupid place sometimes? It is very nice that there was an apology and that these certificates are now being issued but it is all far too late. These actions not only completely changed the lives of those unfortunate people and there families, but all the future generations they might create.

I am being nosey here...
Linda why does D-I-L now want you to go there and look after your GD.
I only have lovely son-in-laws and they don't mind if children are at my place or theirs.
Neither have dogs.. but I am nice to the cats..
Sorry that you are on the "horns of a dilemma" here and understandably want to have peace reigning all around.
Persie :-S
However I am not :-S about food Home fried spuds with garlic and bacon.. we haven't been having potatoes lately with his diet.. so that would be lovely... :-) :-)

...... and anyone else who might have a suggestion!
I have a question for you re probate
This evening I found OH's grandmother and grandfather in the Probate collection.
There were 2 probates for his grandmother
She died in 1931, and there was a filing in 1931 and then another in 1932
First ................
Name: Probate Date:14 Aug 1931 Death Date:14 Aug 1931 Death Place:Westmorland, England Registry: Carlisle
From image:- ........ died 14 August 1931. Probate [granted] Carlisle 11 September 1931 to the said (husband), retired farmer. Effects £3118 10s Further Grant D.R. Carlisle 23 September 1932
Second ..............
Name: Probate Date: 23 Sep 1932 Death Date: 14 Aug 1931 Death Place: Westmorland, England Registry: Carlisle
From image:- ………. Probate [granted] Carlisle 23 September 1932 to (son), student. Effects £3285 3s 10d Former Grant D.R. Carlisle 11 September 1931
Have you any idea what Grant D.R. means??
There is one suggestion that OH had ............
................. his mother had a lingering illness, and had money in her own right. She is supposed to have left some if not all of this to her only child to set him up in business. The son turned 21 in August 1932.
Would this have been set up in a trust that was not declared in 1931?
any help welcome!

that's quite a problem you have there!
I think we can all see both sides, but there isn't an easy solution unless d-i-l would allow you to go to their place to babysit.

Life is a bit topsy turvy at the moment
it's graduation week at the uni ......... 23 graduation ceremonies between Wednesday morning this week and Wednesday afternoon next week ( 4 every day except next Wednesday),
........... and OH goes to every one of them
Plus there is an extra one this year ........... late afternoon next Wednesday.
The "black mark" on Canada's history is the fact that all Japanese living in Canada were moved to camps well inland after Pearl Harbor. It was thought that they were "dangerous" and could be spies.
Not one was ever even suspected by the police, and most were 3rd and 4th generation Canadian. But they lost all their belongings apart from what they could carry with them ......... houses, fishing boats, land etc etc
There were 76 students of Japanese descent at the uni in 1942, and they not allowed to continue
Next Wednesday afternoon, all those 76 are going to be granted certificates to recognise their time at the uni ................... many are now dead of course, as they were all born in the 1920s.
The Canadian government issued an apology to the Japanese community about 5 years ago, and that opened the way for this ceremony.

I can understand both sons' points of view - I am not a 'doggy person' myself but can quite understand people having affection for them but, on the other hand, you hear such tales about dogs savaging children, even those that appear to be quite harmless, or at the very least passing on infections etc., so I can also understand why son No 2 does not want to take that chance.
Don't see why you can't look after GD at their place though ??
Hope you get it sorted Linds Xxxxx <3
