Hi Persie

oh yes, hotel public washrooms are far superior to any other. And are far cleaner than most!

Some department stores come close.

I too have gone into hotel lounges and passed my time.. also they have better bathroom facilities.
Even when we are in Wellington we will park in the city at the back of one of the hotels and rather than walk around the streets we cut through from that side of the hotel to go two - three floors down to the other side on the main street often stopping for a coffee (and a drambuie) on the way.

We have never been questioned anywhere we have been though my mother was once approached by the Military Police (with gun) at the Chicago bus depot, she was leaning over the railing watching what was going on below and the cop said to her " don't stand close to the rail honey"... maybe people jumped from there.. No one worries here if you lean over the railing in the shopping malls.

Pm sent to Dea with what Dr Persie does with burns.. ya gotta cover them after the cold and cream treatment so the air doesn't get at them..

I was once making a large stainless steel dish of savoury mince surrounded by rice to take as my bring a plate for a car club dinner. I put the dish in oven to heat it up on its own.. took it out carefully with oven mitts on. Got the pot of mince and then stupidly picked up the red hot dish with my bare hand.. and it was one of those situations where I gripped tighter instead of letting go.. Three fingers of my hand were red and sore.. so I managed to bandage each one.. and my youngest .. only a preschooler at the time.. said oh look mum's made finger puppets.

Now to go back and have a read about sumptuous rooms etc

I must admit, I am getting to like staying at the more expensive hotels. NOT paying huge amounts for a room ........... 'cos I don't see the need, and we wouldn't do it.

But the service is sooooooooooo good, yet so understated and pleasant!

Have a physical or a dietary problem? No problem, we'll sort something out for you at once.

You can't leave at check out time? No problem, we'll put your case(s) in secure holding for as long as you need.

And you know that it/they WILL be safe.

and they don't hassle you.

PLUS, of course, they have very nice soaps and shampoos, etc, in the bathroom :-D :-D :-D

I don't think I've said, but when we come back from Halifax by train, we have to "kill" several hours in Toronto. The Montreal train gets in at about 3 pm in the afternoon, but the connecting train doesn't leave until just after 10 pm.

The train station, albeit a beautiful art deco place, is NOT very comfortable, and the lounge that we can use is not available until about 7 or 8 pm.

Across the street is one of the hotels built early last century for train travellers ........... but now run by Fairmont Hotels, and no longer as closely connected with the railway.

We put our carry-on bags etc in the railway left luggage (we still have them :-D ), walk across the street with our books and cameras, and sit on one of the many very comfortable settees and chairs in the HUGE lobby. OH often goes out for a walk, but I stay there until about 6 pm, when he returns, and we find somewhere to eat in the hotel ............... the "English-style pub" or the cocktail lounge.

One time, we splurged on the main restaurant .............. it was 2 days after my birthday, a biggie, and we had had a celebratory dinner in Halifax on "the" night, but OH wanted one for just the 2 of us.

We finally leave, and walk back across the street to the train lounge until time for boarding.

When it is -30C or below outside, a very nice way to spend an afternoon!

And I/we have never been approached and asked why we are there.

I AM sure that we have been noticed, but they've not been worried enough by our appearance.

:-D :-D :-D

Isn't it nice when you get a lovely surprise like a luxurious hotel room for basically pennies :-D

Jonesey ..... that was a good one!

as was Linda's and DET's daughter's

I think my personal favourite one was booking OH's retirement trip in late December 2003 .............. Rocky Mountaineer train to Banff ($500 each off the summer price), a couple of nights in Banff, bus to Jasper, a couple of nights at Jasper Park Lodge over New Year, and then home via train to Prince Rupert on the coast and plane home.

Jasper Park Lodge is one of the original hotels in the Rockies .............. and the travel agent said I can get you into one of the original cabins, dinner on your own, and then the big party. Sounded good.

.............. two nights in cabin priced around $160. I looked at the price posted on the back of the cabin door ............. $600 a night :-0

All hotels and motels in Canada and the US used to have to post the set price for the room in the room ............. they stopped doing it about 5 or 6 years ago. But it used to be a good way of finding out is you had got a good deal!

Amazingly enough, even though it is the height of the ski season .......... the Lodge was less than half-full, and was to be even emptier in the first 2 weeks of January, so much so that staff were allowed to take holidays.

We met a young couple from England ......... they'd had 1 week in Banff at the Banff Springs Hotel, rental equipment, ski lessons and ski tickets included, then 1 week in Jasper, same deal .................. it had cost them less than half what they would have paid in, for example, Kitzbuhel or in Aspen Colorado.

Dea ................. I'm trying to think where you might have gone. There really isn't much after Whistler. 30-some km to Pemberton, then gravel roads ........ parts of which are still pretty rough!

I have just 'cooked' for the first time in about 2 weeks!!! I have cooked chilli, pork joint and a banana bread recipe [whilst I have the oven on] - I only cooked the bread because I was determined that I would'nt waste the bananas - lol - will wait to see how it turns out!!!

Well....I just posted [or I thought I had] a posting welcoming Linda to the Fred!!! [late I know] and it has not posted!!!!!!

Will not repeat what I have said [cos I cannot remember] - but welcome Linda. I dont know anything about you [though others of course must do] so please tell me something about yourself?

I post only occasionally - cos I cannot keep up with this lot who stay up so late! - together with personal circumstances - so only post occasionally now.

Hope you are well - and I know that you will have been previously welcomed to the Fred. x
