Cyn,
Know what you mean and agree with your comments about the rendition of Abide With Me.
What that segment needed was a man in a white suit standing atop a stepladder in the centre of the arena leading the audience in the singing of the hymn. That would have gone down better. :-P
I think that "Quirky" is probably the most suitable adjective to describe the opening ceremony as a whole. Some wonderful pieces of invention and imagination coupled with exuberance, enthusiasm and humour. The Queen's "Entrance" was hilarious made even more so by the wind blown effect created by the style of her hat (Fascinator?) and her facial expression (Looking like she was sucking a lemon) when the camera first showed her in the stadium.
Unfortunately my stamina gave out during the time the athletes parade was on so I did not see the end of the performance but from what I read it all seems to have been pretty well received round the world.
Let us hope that Team GB's athletes performances exceed my own and that at least some of them manage to achieve their ambition to become champion in their chosen sport.

Morning Sylvs......thanks for breakfast. Hope you don't mind, but I rummaged around until I found the porridge. :-D
I know what you mean about the ceremony as it certainly didn't have the precision and the glitz of many of the others we've seen. I liked the fact that it was quite natural though and that there were children involved and lots of happy, smiling faces. The James Bond bit was brill. :-D The singing of Abide with Me was dire :-|
Had better get a move on........~~~~~~~~~ sleep well.

got the dreaded purple message again :-P
had to change from .co.uk to .co.za
Jonesy ...................
I should also thank you for that link!!
As a result of Renes posting about it on another site ................... I finally used my anniversary present from last year :-D
OH has kept asking if I have subscribed to fmp "yet"
Now I can say, yes ................... and I got him a cheap deal :-D :-D :-D :-D
It only took me 50 weeks to take him up on the offer :-D
UNFORTUNATELY ................ I spent about 30 or 40 minutes looking at fmp, trying to find some US records for my Great-Aunt and her husband.
Guess what I kept getting every time I wanted to open a record?????????
Yep
an error message :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P
but NOT purple!
This year's anniversary is a biggie ................. and the joint present will be a trip to Churchill on Hudson Bay to see the Polar bears, delayed to October 2013
BUT the fmp sub should need renewing just about anniversary time next year. By which time, I should know whether it is any use to me.

Hi everyone xxx
it was a lovely sunny day today :-D
I watched the Opening Ceremonies on the taped delay that we got here ..... from 7 pm to 11 pm our time.
Liked the first part.
Really disliked the middle section .................. had to keep looking away as the flashing lights combined with the music kept making my eyes feel funny. Just like the start of a migraine
Enjoyed the Athletes Parade ..... I love seeing their uniforms. BUT we kept missing chunks of the Parade for "commercial breaks".
Thought that it was overlong, and wished they had spent more time on similar to the first part.
Doesn't count as one of my favourite Opening Ceremonies!
Been interesting to see the comments by some Canadian and American media
Lots of the aspects of the "show" went right over their heads. For example, many US media types (and people) just cannot understand why you would celebrate the NHS ............. and thought the nurses and the big baby "freaky".
Health schemes are foreign to many of them ............ communistic even!
BUT that is why I forgot to do breakfast and brunch! It ended so late.
