Attention all Troll spotters.

Listed below you will find details of some of the tactics used by Internet Trolls who lurk in the shadows of forums and social websites where they deliberately try to disrupt normal proceedings. You may recognise some ploys that have been used on these boards recently. The best course of action when a Troll is spotted is to ignore their posts entirely since they crave attention and lack of it persuades them to go back down their hole. ;-)

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF TROLLING AND WHY THEY ARE SO EFFECTIVE

Digressing from the topic at hand, especially onto sensitive topics. Not necessarily overtly argumentative, this tactic frustrates its targets with its pointlessness and circularity. Digression onto sensitive topics triggers the strongest reactions.

Hypocriticising, especially for a fault that the critic then displays him/herself. A simple tactic, often this is pedantic criticism of grammar, spelling or punctuation in a post which itself contains proof-reading errors to provoke exasperated responses from others.

Antipathising, by taking up an alienating position by asking pseudo-naive questions, for example. This tactic is heavily reliant on deceiving the group it is aimed at and covertly manipulates egos, sensitivities, morals and feelings of guilt, usually to trigger emotional responses. It can also create moral dilemmas.

Endangering others by giving dangerous advice such as encouraging risky behaviour. A trolling strategy designed to masquerade as help or advice while actually causing harm and/or forcing others to respond to prevent harm. It relies on the target’s social responsibility and moral obligation.

Shocking others by being insensitive about sensitive topics or explicit about taboo topics. This appears to succeed mainly due to the strength of feeling provoked by the deeply personal and extraordinarily hurtful nature of the troll’s insensitivity. It triggers a desire to retaliate that is stronger than the desire to deny the troll the satisfaction of a response.

Aggressing others by insulting, threatening, or otherwise plainly attacking them without adequate provocation. This is open and deliberate aggression without any clear justification with the aim of antagonising its target into retaliating.

Crossposting - sending the same offensive or provocative message to multiple groups then waiting for the response. The message sent by the troll in this tactic is totally off topic and irrelevant. This deliberately careless ‘spamming’ tactic can result in potentially thousands of users being inundated with unwanted or irrelevant messages.

Good morning all..... :-D

Thank you for breakfast Sylvs...... <3

I don't think you'll be using your new garden toys today Linds......not round here anyway..... :-(

Set off for my annual 'fasting' blood test just before 7.30am............I thought I was early, but there were 11 people in front of me..... :-S

Anyway, at least I can now have my breakfast........and it doesn't look as though any walking will get done today. :-(

Appendix - I had mine removed when I was 10 - 6 months after my father had had HIS removed!! If I remember rightly, they kept you in hospital for about 10 days back then and I don't remember anything about bed shortages.........??

Off for a browse...~~~

Hi Dea

It's about 15 hours on the road ................. they usually do what we do, spend at least one night on the road.

They had already booked a hotel, in the largest town in the North, so they could do some shopping, and staying 1, or possibly 2, nights.

I think they were leaving this weekend, Saturday or Sunday .............. and don't think she'd be able to do much driving.

I'm off to bed now

night night xxxx

We came home from afternoon coffee this afternoon (Thursday), and a message on the tape from A ....... a bit weak sounding, but cheerful. Letting us know she was fine but now "short 1 appendix"!

I think the friends are still helping out.

it's raining here :-(

Cynthia Report 27 Jun 2013 18:37

Yep......went for a walk and it was beautiful. The rain came later :-D

When I came home, I started to open my new printer in readiness of setting it up. One and a half hours later, I had succeeded...........all connected to the WiFi - all by myself..........takes a bow.. <3

Jonesey, the make begins with an E and ends with an N..... ;-)

I staggered down from doing that, had a quick lunch and was off to visit my friend. It was too wet to go out, so I did a bit of shopping for her and then helped her to tidy the small bedroom cupboard.

Arrived home and spent an hour putting a list together of possible contacts for an upcoming meeting with an MP re autism.

Then a stirfry

and now...................going for a browse to see what's been going on here..... :-)

Glad I didn't put the washing out.

Totally wiped out today, these early nights don't seem to be working. Maybe I should stay up late, go clubbing and see if that works

Linda Report 27 Jun 2013 12:54

Sylvia hope your niece is ok what a rotten thing to happen good that they have friends close by.

Go a walk? It's pouring here :-(

I am so glad I got the duvet washed yesterday. Have to go into Argos to pick up new set (got a BOGOF ) have also ordered some toys for the garden.

I got a toy lawnmower, a golf set and skittles for less than £9 :-D

That will keep madam busy :-D

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 27 Jun 2013 09:01

Good morning......... :-D

Thank you Sylvs......I will stick with porridge again please.

Do hope your niece recovers quickly - what a shock for them all - and how fortunate they had friends within reach.

The graduation thing is obviously another commercial 'ploy' to get people to spend money and, of course, there will be pressure on parents to keep up with everyone else. :-(

Probably off for a walk soon and then I am going to see my friend this afternoon. I had said that I would help her to practice walking on her 'wheely friend' outside but, the forecast says it's going to rain. :-(

Better get my skates on...~~~~~

Heard about 90 minutes ago that OH's niece is in hospital ............... this is the one who visited us yesterday (Tuesday) morning with her 2 little girls.

She said she had tummy pains, but thought she was having problems because she had not been drinking enough water with travelling and staying in hotels for over a week.

It's appendicitis.

her husband took her to the hospital in the city where they are staying. A couple of their friends live not that far away, so they zipped over to the hotel and took charge of the 2 girls (as well as their own 3 month old baby)

Now, she has to stay a surgeon, hopefully tonight.

Cyn ..............

I have no idea!

They end up with the children having no childhood, and growing up too fast.

I've seen photos (in newspapers from the US) of "graduation" from pre-school ....... ie, 3-5 year olds

There's also now a trend for Prom and Graduation from elementary school ............. which for us is around the age of 13 or 14.

So parents have to spend big bucks on Prom Dress fro that as well as the end of High School Prom, 4 or 5 years later.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 26 Jun 2013 21:44

Sylvs, that sounds a dreadful system...........why do parents have to be so keen to see their children grow up to soon? :-(
