My son only has a day to day contract at the moment so wants something which will be a month to month so he can plan his life better or permanent. He prefers to have this contract to signing on the dole and I admire him for it. He has friends who just sign on but he his disgusted with them when there is work out there, it may not be your life's ambition but it is work and as an able bodied person thinks that you do what is necessary to pay for the luxuries. For one so young he is very careful with his money. When his endowment matured he put it in an ISA. When I was his age I blew every penny I got.

how good that you refused that surgeon's treatment

I've met doctors like that ...... including the pediatrician who was called in at the last minute when I had to have a cesarean. He was the pits ........ believed that women knew nothing, could understand nothing. He gave the husbands all the information.

I was supposed to take J to see him 6 weeks after she was born. Instead I went to my GP, and said "Do I have to see him again? I don't want to." Dr B looked at me, gave a slight grin, and said I could see him instead! He had known me for 6 or so years at that point!

You are very lucky Sylvia,

I was sent to see a surgeon about 10 years ago because of a problem with a stone in the salivary gland (obviously less severe than yours but excruciatingly painful and debilitating)

I had a recurrence of the problem several times and was sent back to see him - he told me off for wasting his time - I had not had the operation he offered and so I was a stupid woman who he was not prepared to help !

The operation he was offering was the removal of the salivary gland which was a major operation with a lot of risk involved.

If all went well, I would be left with a huge scar down in front of my ear, down my neck and across my throat and VERY probably a paralysis of that side of my face !!!

He was an extremely arrogant 'Bar Steward' who believed that he was 'God' !!!!!!

I did a lot of research and found a Specialist in London who would take a look at what was really going on - I went there - she did an investigation (can't remember what it was called but it involved putting a camera through into the gland to see what whas happening) - All was healthy and she cleared the 'stricture' (sticking together of the tube to the gland) and all I have had to do since is to manually press on the gland each morning to move the fluid through.

No Huge scars, paralysed face, or subsequent loss of confidence.

He could have ruined my life - I am just thankful I did not let him !

Your lovely surgeon sounds wonderful - you appear to be in very good hands.

Syl....this very week on BBC radio.

Scientists claimed that doing moderate exercise while undergoing cancer therapy increased recovery by about 50%

So...let’s have you out jogging....OK walking will do

thank you

yes, she is eminently sensible, and says exactly what she thinks

I loved it when I had her as the surgeon 16 years ago, and was so glad when the GP said she was his surgeon of choice.

Do hope that your son finds a permanent job.

I do know some people who prefere temping ........ good pay, and opportunities to take time off if you want to. But most people like the security, and benefits, of a permanent one.

will keep fingers, toes, etc, crossed for him

yes, it is now overnight for a mastectomy

You are sent home with the staples in

I was in for about 5 days in 1995. My niece was in overnight in about 2004.

They reckon that it is cheaper to have you in hospital for as little a time as possible .......... and ti is also safer as you ahve less chance of picking up an infection.

Even last time, I was released with the staples in, and had to go to the surgeon's office to have them taken out.

and, yes, they literally were staples :-D

OH was so amused whn he saw them (he hadn't believed me when I kept saying the word), that he burst out laughing, got off balance, and fell out the bedroom door into the hall way!

So glad you have a surgeon who doesn't beat around the bush and says it how it is. She sounds like the kind of doctor I like and you are in good hands. Will be thinking of you.

I've been busy helping my son find a permanent job. He's been temping since he was made redundant and although the money is good he would prefer something with less uncertainty. He also appreciates the fact that at least he is working. I am still taking rent off him which I put to one side so that if he does get lean patches he will have something to fall back on.

Had a bit of a surprise while we were waiting

There was another waiting area for another set of offices across the hall from where we were sitting. We both noticed a woman pacing around and looking upset.

Then, I looked over to see another woman had arrived and was talking to the upset one

The arrival was a woman I had worked with for about 10 years!

I went and spoke to her ............ upset woman was her sister, and yes, another breast cancer, and also her second go round.

she is extremely sensible, pulls no punches, says exactly what she means and means what she says.

That's why I liked her so much last time.

I have no doubt that she would have said no if she had thought the mastectomy was not a suitable option.

Hi dea
xxx

thanks for doing breakfast, along with C and Persie

I went to bed very early last night, slept for 7 hours solid, without moving!

oh .................... forgot to say, I will probably be in hospital just overnight, so splurged by requesting a semiprivate (2 bed) ward. Our extended health will probably pay for it. But even if not, it will be worth it to me!
