Dont watch WDYTYA -- unless I am desperate to watch something and nothing else is on ----

have to say my sister Marie ( who has no interest in anything much but gardening ) faithfully watches it --- so as to discuss it with me ---on the assumption I watch it ---- so had to watch the Dot Cotton one -- which I thought was quite interesting --luckily I was not here to watch JKR ---

But I do watch Heir Hunters coz it is my coffee time ---- but it is all only entertainment --

--- Frasers knocked on my brothers door - looking for me when ex died intestate --- did not know of divorce ---- my son did not pay fees -- we claimed ourselves

I have long thought that some of the content of programmes such as Heir hunters or WDYTYA if not exactly made up is "adjusted" to make it seem more exiting/miraculous than it really is.

Heir hunters in particular always makes me smile when they incorporate a segment where one of the Fraser partners pays a visit to dilapidated home of the deceased and finds evidence or photographs which they claim were instrumental in cracking the case. Unless I am mistaken Fraser's were unlikely to be given access to the building before the case was solved and proven.

WDYTYA is also guilty at times of doing something that we as family historians know to be "Iffy" such as making assumptions and then making the details fit the facts. Last week was a classic. The program declared that J.K. Rowling's ancestor Louis Volant and his wife Eliza were matrimonially separated at the time of the 1911 census. They made this assumption based upon the fact that they were shown as being at 2 different addresses when the census was taken. In the case of Eliza they made play of the fact that her status had originally been written as "Wife" which had been crossed through and replaced by "Head". What they failed to notice or point out was that the crossing out and the word "Head" was in a completely different colour ink and a different hand. Had they thought about it a little more they might have equally assumed that the reason Louis was shown at a separate address that night was that if he was regularly working as a waiter until the early hours of the morning, then sleeping in a single room close to his place of employment on work nights may well have been preferable to returning to his family home in Marylebone at 3~4am.

Still I suppose it makes for more entertaining television if there is a hint of sensationalism added.

All quiet one morn when he was 18 months and I realise he has not woken me....Toooooooo quiet.

Go in his room and he has squeezed between the cot bars screwed in front of window and the window and has window open looking out...Top floor of 4 story house..Arrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh.

Man in to put bolts on all metal frame windows later that day....

Garden had a fence that turned over at the top as he would climb it with dog and go off through the back gardens....That stopped that as they couldnt work out how to get up past the overhang.

Watched one episode of Heir hunters the other day and tried finding the deaths (2006)of 2 people they say they have got nowhere with....Not on FMP Index as far as I can see...So do they make some stuff up?

I have the ones which go across like a roller blind - They cannot be lifted off or, much to his GREAT frustration - opened by my little grandson and he is a VERY strong boy !!!

When he was aged 3 my eldest son decided to go walkabout one summers afternoon.

The first my wife knew about it was when there was a knock at the front door and upon opening the door discovered him accompanied by a lady who my wife recognised as the mother of one of my 6 year old daughters school classmates. She had discovered him walking along the street which led to the school. To make matters worse he was completely naked which was the state he had been in playing contentedly in the our back garden when my wife last saw him. Apparently he had decided to go to the school to collect his sister which he usually did (Whilst clothed) with his mother.

We never did discover how he had managed to open the garden gate as its latch was out of his reach but just in case the latch was quickly supplemented with a bolt at the top of the gate.

P.S. Cyn, So your vicar found the Australian Army letter funny. That's a first, something I have written amusing a member of the clergy.

I have them to keep dogs out and Mummy had one on his bedroom door.

No problem if he cant open it...Just lift it right off..!

We had stairgates to keep our dogs downstairs......so they came in handy when the grandchildren came along. When both my children and the grandchildren were small, I found a playpen a real boon and could get on with things knowing they were okay.
