Well Miss Marples...

There has to be an answer in there somewhere...

Me I read about this chap aged 35... worked as a miner... this was a long long time ago... he got up one morning made his wife a cup of tea and took it into her in bed. He then returned to the lounge lay down and blew his head and hands off with dynamite... There was apparently no reason for this suicide, that anyone could come up with.

I think in modern day times Qantico would be called in and a profile done on the wife and others...

Ah I think I'll go the bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon!

II was having a trawl through some old newspapers as some of the little articles etc really interesting and I thought I’d follow one small case through which sounded a bit interesting. So if you have a spare few minutes read on…

In a nutshell… and I have made up the names (Just in case)!

It is 1932, there is a husband (Charlie) and wife (Annie) running some sort of boarding house in an inner city.

The wife begins an affair with another chap (Harry) who has left his wife for her. The articles state that they were very much in love. He moved into the boarding house and the husband Charlie didn’t seem to mind. Harry however still sent money to his legal wife.

Annie then asks Harry to draft a new will which he does, and leaves everything to her. Upon his death Annie advises she has destroyed the will and his estate reverts to his widow but does not explain why she asked him for a new will.

A month later Harry passes on from a mysterious illness and Annie later delivers a baby who apparently resembles a strong resemblance to Harry and not her hubby.

Two new boarders arrive, one a male (Fred) is apparently staying with her despite having a wife and 5 children at home. Witness statements stay he seemed very possessive of her, and he took her away on holidays etc until his wife write to him and complained. He insists he never exercised his rights but he was attracted to her kindness…and he advises the husband never minded either…

Another boarder arrives (Jean) and she sees Fred occasionally moving the bowls of water with the arsenic fly traps in them and replacing them with clean water. Jean does not like Fred so there is some dispute about this.

Next Fred collapses and is taken to hospital. On arriving back at Annie’s house he suffers a relapse and is admitted to hospital. A scientific examination for the time, shows arsenic poisoning.

Jean then collapses and is admitted to hospital with suffering similar symptoms.

Annie is arrested and is held on remand. They exhume the body of Harry and cannot determine a cause of death although he does have traces of arsenic in his body.

Annie is then released from the attempted murder charge of Harry and is set to face charges on Jean and Fred, when she is released on lack of evidence.

Hmmm so this is real life…was the person who committed the crime:

( A )Annie – although she had nothing to gain from their demise and insisted that Harry had pneumonia and Fred was poisoning himself to stop his own return to work..

(B) Fred – perhaps he was angry because he couldn’t or didn’t or keep going what he wanted? Witness statements place him in a pharmacists’ trying to purchase arsenic although he claims no memory of this. Why did he swap the water with the fly papers in them, although he denies this. He was also a serving member of the police force,

(C) No one - Perhaps just a series of unfortunate coincidences

(D) Charlie - the husband who didn't mind..perhaps he did!

I thought I’d take a look and see if I could find anything of them on the sites. One person has Fred in his tree, and his children but very few details.

Jean I can track only on one electoral roll and an earlier marriage, although statements advise that she was a divorcee

Nothing at all on Annie or her husband, or the child resembling Harry

Fred I could trace on a few more electoral rolls and then nothing.

See you just couldn’t make all this up!

So would you pass all this info onto the person who has Fred in their tree? I can imagine it may come as a bit of a shock if you never knew all this about your relatives! It is a bit of a sad story for all concerned…

I can only assume that they all changed their names or remarried etc. Annie was only 40 and must have been a bit of a looker I assume! Fred was in his late 40’s and I don’t know about Harry or Jean..

Well done Jonesey and Lexi is a lovely name...

Unlike you Gracie, I never wanted to have lots and lots of babies... I took a long time to even consider having a second child.. there is over a 5 year gap between them.

>> we have just got back from being out again and as I won't be here tomorrow evening (morning) I guess I better look for some food for breakfast.

Morning all, from a cold, wet and windy Melbourne!!!!

Well Blackpool sounds very interesting...I had heard of it but for some reason (probably only based on UK tv series!) I thought it was something to do with a pier.

:-)

Congratulations on your new arrival Jonesey! Nice name as well. I love babies, would if I could have lots and lots myself!

Renes,

Mamma's is in Topping Street, not far from the Winter Gardens. Just Googled and they have a website:

http://www.mammasblackpool.co.uk.

I and a group of friends used to go to Blackpool fairly regularly for "Male Bonding" weekends. We would arrive on a Friday afternoon, have a meal (Usually fish and chips) then spend the evening getting progressively the worse for drink. On Saturday mornings we always went clay target shooting then back to our hotel for a change of clothes and an aperitif or 2 or 3 then off to Mamma's for dinner. After visiting Mamma's some of the group would pop into the lap dancing club just up the street from Mamma's whilst the rest would inevitably end up in one of the towns many pubs. I only once went to the lap dance but nobody asked me to dance so I left early. ;-)

On Sunday mornings it was more shooting, lunch and then set off home.

As weekends went they were good entertainment but quite expensive. On the last weekend we were there the hotel bar bill alone came to over £750 but there were 8 of us.

Blackpool is gaudy, tacky and a great place to see mobs of Elvis look-a-likes and herds of scantily clad young hen party participants roaming the streets. Sophisticated it is not but who needs sophistication when your principal object is to escape reality for a brief period. As Sidney Friedman (Mash) said, "To maintain your sanity you need to pull down your pants and slide on the ice occasionally".

Renes Report 28 Sep 2011 21:35

I love Scarborough too

Paul and I went there onetime for a long weekend and he had bought stink bombs

He kept standing behind couples on the sea front and dropping the bombs and wandering off

Most women immediately turned to their husbands and blamed them

Paul was like a kid -- he loved it ----

The stink bombs for forbidden after that

The sea front of South Bay always had blocks of low buildings .................... where one could spend every tiny bit of money playing games of chance!

In the 1950s, it was Bingo.

open-fronted bingo parlours one after the other!

I forget what was in those same buildings in 1995

but yes, take the money!!

But then there were some excellent, high-priced, stores away from the seafront, including a branch of at least one London store.

and there was a wonderful chocolatier.

I can taste their rum balls even now :-)

I have photos of my grandparents taken in Scarborough in the mid-1920s

but have no idea why they took such a fancy to Scarborough

it was one heck of a trip in the 1920s and 30s!

Even in the 1950s, it would take 5 or 6 hours to get there by coach

Snap about Scarborough, Gins!

OH and I went there when we were back in 1995 .................. 4 weeks after the last op!!

We stayed for 3 nights at a private hotel in the North Bay ...... my parents always went to South Bay.

We just looked in a book, picked the name of a hotel, drove up to the door, and had our choice of 2 rooms.

Does help going in early July!!!

It was during the Fish Wars ........... and one of the trawlers in the harbour was flying a Canadian flag, because Canadians had supported the UK during that time

It was amazing how little Scarborough had changed over the years .................. the businesses were often different, but the buildings were the same, so the street scapes and views were all as remembered!

Our previous visit was in 1973, our first trip back after emigrating. My brother booked us into the Grand on that trip ................ 4 meals a day! waddle waddle!!

we used to go on a "day" trip to Blackpool in the early 1950s, usually in October, arranged by the place where Dad worked.

a so-called family outing

Leave Oldham mid afternoon, stop somewhere for liquid refreshment aka "tea", arrive Blackpool, a couple of hours "free time", then back to the "chara" for a tour of the Illuminations. At least one more stop for liquid refreshment on the way home ........ while the kids sat on the doorstep of the pub or in the "garden" if they had one! There was a favourite stop at The Green Man ............... but heaven alone knows exactly where that was. It's just the name that has stuck with me!

Only went once in the day time, and that was with my brither's wife, whose brother lived in Blackpool for a time.

I remember sunbathing in the sand dunes on that trip ............. in my itty bitty blue bikini :-D

Our favourite place for summer holdiays was Scarborough .................. my parents went there every eyar from 1928 to 1939, and then from about 1946 until the 1960s. Dad went by himself or with one of my brother's daughters after Mum died in 1959, right up until he died in 1971.

:-D :-D :-D
